Six days later at the height of the full moon, the whole of the pack was outside watching as Kaji held Mai, Misae’s newborn daughter. When the child looked into her eyes she whispered softly, “Luyu, white dove, for that is who you are to the mother and our guardian, the moon.” She raised the uncovered babe to the sky facing the moon and called out, “Magena! Behold your newborn daughter! Born unto Misae and Askook, the newest of our pack, Mai, coyote, she will be to us but you her name is given Luyu. Let her future hold safety in the arms of the mother and your protection, great guardian.”
The whole of the pack howled in joy calling to the young one, calling to her wolf. This had only been the third time they had seen the ceremony, heard it described but never seen it happen. The pack allowed Kaji to perform this ceremony only because all four of the children had chosen her to be their guardian, for what reasons only Tokala had an idea. He supposed that because of her extraordinary strength as a wolf and the way she was so caring combined with her royal blood, the innocent pups were drawn to her for protection. As for their relationship, Tokala had tried to be less pushy but that only lasted so long before he broke. They were on rocky grounds for the time being with no change in the near future until Kaji could get her head wrapped around all of it. First she needed to be able to stop seeing him as someone that she had to take care of all the time and see their future as partners not her being a wet-nurse.
A month later the pack was preparing to move. Their time had come to head for the safe place that would be their new home. Everyone had gathered their belongings and what could not be carried was given to Halona to dispose of. The blankets were rolled, the water skins filled, and the food bag was overflowing. It would be a hard run ahead of them each taking shifts to carry the children and belongings, but still far easier without the snowy cold. Kaji purposefully searched out Mark to ask him just one last favor before she had to leave.
She found him with Tokala just sitting on the back porch. They greeted her and she spoke, “Hi. Mark I was wondering if I might have one last ride before departing.”
“It’s getting’ purty late, but sure if ya want ta.”
“Thank you so much, this means the world to me.”
“Don’t mention it,” He said with a smile. She turned and started to walk off when he yelled to her, “Take Blizzard would ya? He needs a good runin.”
She waved her hand to let him know she heard him then ran off for the barn. It didn’t take a genius to know that Tokala was following her. Things between them were getting much better now that he was controlling his urges more and she was loosening a bit. They didn’t talk while leading Blizzard and Cloud out of the barn to mount. Tokala had finally learned to ride bareback so they quickly mounted and were off.
After a good run they slowed their mounts to a slow walk taking in the peaceful surroundings. They were up in the farthest pasture, far away from everything related to humans, not far from the tree line. Kaji’s soft voice set the tone for their talk, “Tokala?”
“Hmm?” he responded looking to her.
She looked off to the trees, “Where do we go from here? You’ve said that we are going to a safe place but where?”
“Oh. Well I want it to be a surprise for you. Not very many know how to get to this place anymore and my uncle won’t go there.”
“You’re sure we’ll be safe then?”
“Yeah,” he assured her. “Question?”
“Answer,” she replied making them both laugh for a moment.
“Where do you see our relationship going, truthfully?”
“Damn it! I hate it when he does that.”
