The sharp click hit her ears. GUN!!!!!
She dropped to the ground to hide her form and started growling low, her fear giving her anger a lethal edge.
“Mark I’ve brought the rest of the family, put the gun away!” Zaltana’s yell reached them. The others were almost to the house now. The man Kaji now saw standing on the porch shouldered his gun and as the screen door’s hinges gave a soft squeal a woman stepped out of the house standing by his side. The hollow thwack of the screen shutting sent Kaji into overdrive and she tensed slowly edging into the darkness of the underbrush where she could make a run for it.
We have to go back! Why did we agree to this! her wolf screamed despite the scent and power coming from Tokala as her alpha commanding her to calm and stay.
Tokala reached down, scooped her into his arms and began to walk towards the house whispering, “Just trust me. They are our family.”
As they neared the others her grip tightened until her nails were digging into his shoulder. They were just a few feet from Mark and Halona when her whole body stiffened, her nails breaking his skin. Tokala hissed causing her to realize what she had done, and pull away. She whispered, “Sorry.”
“Come in and get some food,” Halona said grabbing Mark and leading the way. Once inside and the door shut he put her down but refused to let go of her wrist until she was sat between him and Askook. There was already a large amount of food on the table. When Mark came back in, after having stowed the gun away from sight at Halona’s request, they were told to just dig in. Everyone started to grab at the food although still managing to have manners about it. Kaji waited a bit before she reached out and served herself some meat from the nearest platter. She was hungrier than she expected and started to grab other things as well, yet never farther than in the immediate area. While they ate introductions and small talk were made. She shrunk a bit when Mark’s gruff voice broke the contented silence that had fallen as the meal ended.
“I’m afraid we ain’t got enough rooms for everyone so one of ya’ll have to sleep in the top of the barn. We have a cot set up and some blankets already out.”
“Of course,” Tokala said with a smile. “We’re just grateful you’re allowing us to stay. And you will let us help around the place to repay you?”
“Can use the help, winter’s been hard ‘round here an’ havin’ to let the hands go for the season been rough.”
Halona cleared off the table and did the dishes in a matter of minutes while everyone sat in a quiet lull. She whipped off her hands on a rag and turned to everyone, “Alright let’s show you the rooms and you can choose which is whose. Some of the guys will have to double up.”
We will not sleep in a human bed!
“No!” Kaji and her wolf screamed at the same time panicking about being trapped and the smell of human was raising her anxiety level.
They all stood and Kaji placed a hand on Tokala’s arm. She said simply, “The barn.”
“No, with that injury you should be inside where it is safe,” he shook his head.
“No,” She said low and threatening causing everyone in the room to freeze as Tokala’s wolf easily bristled at the open challenge. She shot a wary look at Mark then into Tokala’s eyes, repeating herself more forcefully. “The barn.”
He got the idea, his wolf suddenly shifting from angry alpha mode to an overprotectiveness he had never experienced for anyone in his life. Turning to Halona he nodded his consent giving her a pointed look. She nodded in understanding and gestured for Mark to show the others to the rooms while she took Kaji out. When they got in she was shocked to see the horses in the stalls. She went up to the nearest, a large bay quarter horse Morgan cross, and started to pet her. “You like horses then?”
