“There is a very bad storm we are heading into.” He was trying to help calm her.
“Yes I know,” She whispered trying to keep the fear from her voice. “I also know that we are being tracked.”
“I’m just hopping that we can get to safety before they catch up to us.”
“They should catch up to us soon since we can’t outrun them at this rate. The next couple of days Dabun will have her baby. If we can just wait three more days I’ll be able to shift and help defend them.”
“We will do what we can.” He pulled her onto his lap, “Sleep.”
She bent her head down in shame and curled into as small a ball as she could make, tense and ready for flight if he tried anything. His arms were around her securely one of his fingers rubbing small circles on her back trying to get her to relax into him. Inside, his wolf was growling both irritated at her lack of trust and content with having her close in his arms. He buried his head into her hair at the base of her neck softly breathing in her scent. It delighted him the shiver that ran though her as he exhaled and how she pushed into him, but the quite whine told him he was pushing his luck. Kaji was startled by the shock that ran through her as he breathed on the back of her neck and the almost purr her wolf was doing scared her. She knew she could not pull away even as the whine escaped her lips so she pushed herself into him and raised her head to look into his eyes. He held no malice, but a gentleness that startled her, and as her eyes shined in fear, his were concerned. She ducked her head and nestled into him, she could hear his heart beating as she rested her head on his chest and he rested his head on hers. He shifted his hand slightly on her back pulling her closer and now rubbing closer to her side. She sighed contentedly as the sensation caused her to relax into him. Soon darkness enveloped her. Tokala sighed with a smile as the sleeping Kaji raised her hand to just in front of her face and rested it on his chest, subconsciously digging her fingers into his flesh. With her gentle kneading and her very essence filling his senses, his wolf calmed for the first time since he rescued her and felt the subtle pull only a mate could create. Despite that one little draw at their first meeting, nothing else pointed to her being his mate and it confused him, but right now he was content as he fell into a restful sleep.
Two days later about midday, they were hit by a full on blizzard, without any warning what so ever. As the storm raged around them splitting the pack. Somehow Dabun, Orenda, Tokala, and Kaji were all in one group and the others had disappeared from sight. They could not go any farther with the force of the storm but there was no shelter except a very large snow drift Kaji wrapped all the blankets around Dabun and Orenda before she stepped towards the drift. The wind carried with it the very faint sent of those tracking them and nothing else, but it was hard to tell the distance. They needed to hide and quickly. While the others stayed in the sheltered area she went around examining the drift. It was very wide and tall but it would only be able to make room enough for three people before it collapsed. Tokala caught up with her but before either of them could speak there was a yell from Orenda.
“Tokala we have a problem!” They ran to the women and found the blankets pulled away from them. Dabun was clutching her stomach and Orenda was trying to get her to lay back. “The baby is coming.”
Tokala went to them confused while Kaji immediately jumped at the drift and began to dig when the smell of the wolves became stronger. Tokala called to her, “Kajika, what are you doing?”
“Make shift shelter they need protected. The smell is strong on her,” she called out of the hole that she had created. When she had a tunnel half a bodies length long she began to dig out a crevice wide enough for Orenda and Dabun to fit and birth the child. When it was big enough to kneel at her full height and to mover around she started to gently press the snow to form a hard shell that she could stand fully in. The others would have to stoop a bit since she was so much smaller but it was wide enough that Dabun could lay full. When she had dug down to the dirt she found a very long stick and pressed it through the side wall to create an air whole. She crawled to the entrance and poked her head out. “It is just big enough for the two of you. Dabun come here and lay on your back I’ll pull you through.”
