"Jake!" I yelled out to him, running into the woods. He didn't get too far away, because I caught up to him and grabbed his wrist quickly. "Jacob!" I yelled at him when he wouldn't turn to face me. His body was shaking, and he said in a dark, angry voice: "Get away from me, Bella."
"No, not until you tell me why you are acting like this." I still hadn't let go of his wrist, determined to get answers from him.
"Bella, let go of me."
"No."
Although I was strong, Jacob seemed stronger. He ripped his arm out of my hand and turned to face me, his eyes were wild.Standing confidently, I stared him straight in his eyes.
"You won't hurt me."
Jacob closed his eyes and turned his head away, and I noticed how his body suddenly stopped shaking. When his eyes opened again, they looks sad, apologetic. "I'm sorry, Bella. I guess as stupid as this sounds, I got angry."
"Why?" I reached out to grab his hand, he flinched back but suddenly calmed himself so I could grab it."He has everything I want." He said quietly, looking down at our hands.
"What?" I whispered, confused.
"He has you, Bella." I was shocked at this confession, Jacob had expressed interest in me before, but I always thought that was his way of teasing. For a vampire, it was evident I wasn't observant.
"Jacob, you have me." I said quietly."No, Bella. I don't." He was still whispering, and I was saddened at what he meant. Jacob is my best friend, him having feelings for me was going to ruin this bond we have and I didn't want to lose that. "Jake.." I whispered, saddened. "I'm sorry." He whispered, letting go of my hand only to wrap me in a hug. "This is so wrong." He chuckled softly in my ear, and I raised my eyebrows at him once he let go.
"We should be enemies, not friends. I should hate you, not feel this way about you." He was smiling again and I smiled back. "There's no chance for us, though." He said quietly, looking at the ground again.
"I'm sorry." I whispered at him.
"I understand. I'll just have to deal with being in the friend-zone." He laughed at the term and I smiled back at him. "There's a bonfire tonight, do you want to go with me?" He asked suddenly, and I was grateful he changed the subject."Yeah, sure." I agreed, and Jacob seemed happy that I did. Grabbing my hand, he led me back out of the forest and we sat on the beach again for a while.
-
The night seemed to come fast, and I've sent a text to Edward letting him know I was okay. He hasn't responded, and part of me wondered what he was doing. I tried to stay focused on what Jacob was telling me, and how he joined the pack. It was when he mentioned his great grandfather, Ephraim Black, that I completely tuned in to his story.
I already knew that Jacob had the alpha's blood in him, which would make him alpha, but Jacob surprised me when he told me he turned it down.
"What? Jacob, why would you turn that down?" I asked in disbelief, to which he just shrugged.
"Turning it down seemed like a good idea. Plus, I knew that Sam likes the title. It's no secret he enjoys being the boss."
"Jake you are a born alpha, though. Surely there will be some complications." Again, he just shrugged. When we went back to Jake's house, I reapplied my contacts for the second time that night while Jacob got dressed. He came back out wearing a dark grey sweater and smiled at me, holding out his hand for me to take. Although we were supposed to be enemies, being with Jacob made me feel comfortable. Jacob led me on a walk leading to a wide opening, where people were surrounding a fire-pit.
Before we could get too close, a kid almost as tall as I am ran over to us.
"Bella, this is Seth." Jacob introduced us, "I told you about him. Him and his sister just recently joined the pack." My mind traveled back to the stories he was telling me earlier, and I faintly remember Leah and Seth being brought up. "Harry Clearwater's kids?" I asked, and Seth smiled brightly. Suddenly there was a whistle, and we all gathered around the fire. I recognized mostly everyone, but there were a few new faces. Jacob whispered to me who they were, and that they were the girlfriends of some of the werewolves that imprinted.I recognized Harry Clearwater, Charlie's close friend, sitting beside Billy, and a young girl with short cropped hair sitting beside him. I could tell by the resemblance and the glare she was shooting my way, that was Leah.
"Ignore her." Jacob told me, but I wasn't intimidated by her glares.Suddenly, Billy cleared his throat and began the stories. They were the stories of their past, their legends. Sitting by the fire and watching how the flame danced with the wind, my mind drifted towards Edward, he still hadn't texted me back and I was worried that he was angry about me coming here.
Finally, the get together was brought to a close, and Jacob walked me back to my truck.
"I really liked spending time with you today, Bella. You might have changed into something a little more different, but I know you're the same girl I grew up knowing. You should come down here more often, I miss you." His words were sincere, and I smiled at him as I opened the car door.
"Yeah, Jake. I had fun, and you're not the same boy anymore. I guess we both changed in more ways than one. I'll try coming down here more, but-" Jacob interrupted me before I could finish speaking."But what, your blood-sucking boyfriend won't let you?" It took just one glare for him to back-pedal.
"Sorry, your boyfriend." He rolled his eyes, and I got up and sat down in the drivers seat.
"He just worries about me, that's all." I told him as I rolled down the window and shut the door so we could still speak.
"You can take care of yourself, and I'm not going to hurt you, Bella. I'd never do that to you." I sighed and closed my eyes, feeling the last of my contacts dissolve. When I opened my eyes again, Jacob looked caught off guard.
"Woah, Bells-"
"I know. I was wearing contacts."
"Well, I figured, but I didn't see you take them out."
"I don't need to, they sort of dissolve from the venom."
"Dissolve? You're not scared that won't affect your vision?" He looked confused, and I laughed out loud.
"Yeah, that was a stupid question. Anyways, I gotta run. Just please, try and come down here more often, okay? Just, call first." I didn't want to say anything to get his hopes up, so I simply nodded. When he smiled his big grin at me, I smiled back. Waving goodbye, he jogged back down the path we took and I started up my truck.Sorry if this chapter is short!
