:::BRUCE:::
"What the fuck could've happened?"
I say to myself, in panic mode as I ran a yellow light towards Chris's apartment complex. Just hearing Tereny tell me what Keira said had my head in a million places. Chris isn't a troublemaker, so why would she be getting arrested?
Hopefully, I make it in time before the police leave. But, I knew I wasn't going to make it in time. This was real time, not fiction. So I grabbed my phone from out of the passenger's seat and dialed Keira's number, praying she answered.
"BRUCE!" Keira shouted. "They just left." She said.
"What happened, though?" I asked.
"My mom called this morning demanding I come home. So, Chris took me. We were about to take my bags out of the car and my mom just started going off on me and Chris. Chris was trying to be real respectful, but my mom wasn't having that. She called the police and told them that Chris had assaulted her while were standing right there. I can't believe she actually did this." Keira sounded as if she was about to cry.
"A'ight. Just calm down. I'm on my way to pick you up and we're gonna figure something out." I tell her before ending the call and pulling into the drive-through into the apartment complex to find Keira standing outside looking as if her life depended on Chris's freedom.
A few of Chris's neighbors were standing outside, staring at Keira as if she was crazy or something, like she'd had something to do with Chris being arrested. When she saw my car, she didn't give me enough time to make it over to her before she was running over and hopping inside of my car while it was still moving, just about.
She closed the door shut and I made a u-turn to exit out of the complex. Keira was shaking her right leg, being impatient as I got back onto the road. Honestly, it had me a little jealous about how much Keira cared for Chris in just a short amount of time, knowing that she'd wanted to ruin my marriage with Tereny to get back with me. But trust me, that bit of jealousy that I had vanished quickly when I thought about my best friend being behind bars for no reason.
"I can't believe she actually called the police on Chris." Keira said after a long term of silence. I glanced at her as I stopped at a red light. "Why does she wanna ruin my life so bad?" Keira covered her face with her hands for a brief moment and then looked straight ahead out of the windshield before crossing her arms. I shook my head wondering the same damn thing. Adele had some issues and it was clear. Not to mention, this was just so much on Keira when she'd just lost her father and his funeral is right around the corner. I felt bad for her.
"Don't worry, Keira. We're going to get Chris out." I tell her.
"I really hope so." She said as she looked at me for a moment. "Thanks, Bruce." She said to me.
"For what?" I asked, a little confused.
"For not being angry at us." She said, referring to her and Chris.
"Why would I be? We're both happy." I say as I looked at her and saw the sincerity in her eyes. It made me feel good about myself that we could go from being at each others' throat to actually thanking one another. It was crazy how things changed.
"That means a lot to me." She said.
"Me, too." I say, referring to Chris meaning a lot to me. "Just don't hurt her. Just like you, she's been through a lot of shit in her lifetime. Just take it easy on her because I know how you can get." I say, seriously. Keira nods slowly and looked straight ahead. She quickly pointed towards the light, signaling to me that it was green. I chuckled to myself a bit and drove on.
When we made it to the jailhouse, we wasted no time getting out of the car. The lady at the window stared at us as if we were trespassing or something. I just really hoped that Chris's bail was a little of nothing. I had some money put up for a rainy day, but it wasn't much that I could just dabble in because we also had Britney to worry about.
The lady wasn't one for conversation because she was being really rude to us and telling us that Chris doesn't have a bail set yet because she hadn't gone through the booking processes yet and it to give it about thirty minutes to an hour before a bail is posted. Keira was already impatient and her eyes were getting glossy to where I had to calm her down. So I just walked her outside to try and calm her down. I was staring down at the ground, thinking about me and Tereny's situation. The shit was fucking with me now that I was more calm and able to think about myself. But soon as I thought about that, I heard Keira.
"I hate you! I hate you! Why would you do that?!" Keira shouted. I looked over at her and she had her phone up to her ear. "What kind of mother are you?!" I jumped up and rushed over to her. "I wish you'd die already! You don't care about anyone else but yourself and I hate you! I never want to see you ever again!" Keira shouted. I grabbed the phone from Keira and she started to cry. I ended the call and wrapped my arms around her, thinking.
I knew that the best thing for me to do was get Chris's parents involved because it was their daughter behind bars. Even though they were miles away, it was still right for them to know what Keira's mother did. But I really didn't want to call them unless I wasn't able to pay the bond. But at the same time, either way it goes, Chris might still have some charges against her because from what Keira did tell me, she was resisting arrest.
So, I called Mr. and Mrs. Smith to let them know what was going on. Of course, Chris's mother was cussing and carrying on, but Mr. Smith assured me that he was on his way. Now, the only thing we could do was just sit around and wait for something to happen.
I just hoped this didn't take forever.
