I headed towards the gardens, avoiding the Swiss guards who were walking around the hallways of the Vatican. The Camerlengo was so heavy. My shoulder started to hurt so I had to carry him bridal style. Should have been the opposite; guy carrying the girl, not girl carrying the guy. I let out a small giggle.
The garden was beautiful. The moonlight lit the place. Flowers and trees filled the area. It was truly a magnificent view. I threw him over the bushes and gladly, he did not wake up. He would be screaming because of his burns and bruises if he did. I spotted Mark's Cafe.
The dark alley near Mark's Cafe... I should take him there for the time being. I said in my mind.
The streets were as quiet as a tomb. No one was strolling around. Seems like everyone were still at St. Peter's Square. I could hear voices singing, praising the Lord for saving them and their Camerlengo from an heroic fall. I spotted a Swiss Guard right outside the back gate.
Dang it. I have forgotten that I'm near the back gate. I should hurry. I said in my mind.
I walked faster. Stealing quick glances at the Swiss Guard, he spotted me.
'Hey! Who are you carrying, 'He yelled across the street. ' Hey, don't run away!! '
I walked as fast as I could. Come on, I'm near. I reminded myself. I kept my distance away from the streetlights, consumed by the dark. I started to run. Taking a quick look behind me, he called for help and started to run too.
As I drew near to the dark alley, I eyed a dumpster at the dead end. I ran towards it. I threw him off my arms behind the dumpster and we hid there for the time being. Footsteps and voices could be heard.
'Where did they go? Are you sure you saw a woman carrying another person and ran away?'
'I'm pretty sure I did. She looked at me for god's sake. '
'You know... Its pretty late. Its like 12.30 a.m... You're probably just tired. Lets go back to the Vatican. Commander Richter might get angry.'
'No! No! Check the alley! They might be in there.'
The alley was dark. They could not see a thing. Not even the dumpster. I sneaked a peek at them. They stupidly did not bother to go deeper into the alley. Stupid guards. I wonder why Commander Richter hired you.. I thought.
'We have to search for them. It might be the Camerlengo that she was carrying!'
'Come on, come on, lets go...'
Their footsteps went further away from us. His fellow Swiss guard "helper", dragged him back to the Vatican. Their voices grew softer and softer. I heaved a sigh of relief. I looked back at the Camerlengo. He just moved and opened his eyes.
