Down By The River - Milky Chance
Chapter 29
I was about to do something I hadn't done in a while, or ever really. I had a lot to talk about, a lot on my mind, but I didn't know who to talk to. June was in the middle of exams and Toni was about to be moved and relocated.
After the miscarriage her parents didn't want her to get pregnant again so they ejected her from the big city and sent her to live with her grandmother off in the Eastern Cape. I didn't agree with their verdict on how to deal with her behaviour, but once a parent makes up their mind, there's not much else you can do about it. I couldn't talk to my mother about it because I knew she wouldn't understand and I wanted to talk to about Terence, so my father was out of the question. There was no one around really who could help me, so when push came to shove I remembered Jade.
We'd never had a relationship like that; we never spoke growing up because we came from different worlds. I would have wanted to speak about Barbie and she had wanted to speak about the status quo of her life and when I came to the time when I wanted to start talking about the status quo of my life she was married. We were never on the same page.
Although I hadn't gotten married I felt like I could have related to her more than ever before. As we grew older I would relate more and more, but the friendship had to start somewhere.
So I picked up my phone and called Jade, she was glad to talk to me, but I still felt like she'd have been more satisfied if she'd gotten this call from June.
She came to pick me up to spend the weekend with her, while her son spent the weekend at his friend. I couldn't help but think that this five wear old had a very active social life and I had to admit I was a little jealous of him.
I got down to business rather quickly quick to start the conversation.
I just looked at her for a few minutes and just wondered when it would be my turn already. She always goes through something and has an experience and about a few a years later she has enough experience about the project to give both June and I advice about it, and it's always spot on. I just felt bad for her, no older sister to look up to. She had to learn everything by herself in order to learn and grow.
"So Malibongwe went to another party?"
"Yeah, he's quite a big boy now. He has a lot of friends too; there is a new party to go to every week."
"I'm a little surprised that he doesn't have a girlfriend."
"Oh, I won't be surprised if he does. At this age, nothing surprises me anymore."
"Aren't you a little young to be feeling that way?"
"Aren't you a little young to have to be dealing with a broken heart? The only broken heart you should be dealing with is the heart of whatever animal you're dissecting in school!" she snapped. She knew I didn't take Life Sciences, but I guessed she couldn't resist with her corny jokes.
We laughed for a short time, but as the joke ran dry our laughter died down. We were stuck again in an awkward silence. I wasn't too against the silences, but Jade hated the quiet.
"Come on," she started, "We both know that you didn't come all the way her just to talk about Maliwve's social life. If there's something bothering you, you should get it off your chest."
I didn't know how to bring it out. Jade and Juniper were quite different in the sense that June would try and ease it out of you, but Jade wasn't like that. She was more, forceful. Or rather, she'd lose interest very quickly. She had the attention span of an ant.
