Chapter 4: Settling

Two weeks later

Settling in a new town and around new people wasn't that hard then I thought it would be. The neighbours were very kind and helped as a lot with putting the house back together after the robbery. Especially Mrs Roth, she always came over to visit and always use to bring homemade apple crumble. She was known as a great cook in the town.

I'm at my room cleaning the mess I made while finishing a art project from school which I have to submit in a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to attend to school because of the amount of time it took travelling to school from my grandma's house. I have tried applying for schools closer to home but none of them have replied any response if I'm accepted or not.

Today Emma is coming over, my best friend. I haven't seen her in the past few months because of the summer holidays and my parent's death. But it feels like years. She didn't know about the lost of my parents until two weeks ago when I called her letting her know that I'm fine.

I hear a knock at the door, I ran downstairs to open the door.

"Skylar!" Emma screamed in my ear while hugging me tightly as she can.

"Hi Emma." 

I tried to keep myself controlled from letting any emotions appear while she was crying on my shoulder. It felt like a huge weight was lifted seeing her again. After the hug I gave a tour around the house and we went upstairs to my room. I discussed everything about what happened, it was a relieve to tell her in details but then at the same time upsetting talking through the past, especially when I'm trying to settle in life somehow, with the help of others around me. Especially the support of my grandma.

"So are you actually going to move schools?" I nodded as a reply to Emma's question.

"That means no more gossip at school with you." I nodded again looking down at my hands.

"Its hard for me to travel around from home to school which only leaves me with one choice to leave school and apply for a closer school, but I will stay in contact with you as much as I can and of course we will be besties forever." Emma chuckled.

After four hours hanging around which seemed like one hour it was time for Emma to leave.

"Remember whenever you need help just call me, yeah?"

"I will" I replied while giving her a hug for maybe the last time.

"Also keep me updated with you and Mark." I teased her. She likes a guy in her Geography class who likes her back but both of them are too shy to admit it to each other.

I waved her goodbye while her mum drove her off.

Everything was changing in life, and a bit too quick. All my loved ones were going further away from me it some sort of situation.

"Skylar, dinner is ready."

I went in the kitchen and I could smell jacket potato. It has been hard handling costs because my grandma is retired and I am at school. We manage on some savings and the money grandma gets from the government. We always have to sacrifice on buying items needed like new shoes. I've been wearing ripped shoes since a month but we couldn't afford getting new ones. Grandma always moans about money, but I'm happy with it, as long as I have gran on my side.

While I was washing dishes, I hear the post man posting a letter, I hope it is a apply back from the schools I applied for.

I picked up the letter on the floor and gave it to my gran.

"Skylar, this letter is for you." Why would a letter come for me. I opened the letter and realised it was a letter from Durden's High School. The letter said. 

Dear Skylar Richard

We are please to inform you that you have been accepted at Durden's High School. You can start attending school from next week.

"What's the letter about Skylar?"

"I got accepted to go to Durden's High School, one of the top school in the city!" I screamed and jumped in the air. But then I realised we didn't have enough amount of money to buy the uniform and to get school study books.

"Skylar. don't worry about the money, I will do something about that, you just need to focus on getting ready to settle in a new school." Grandma read my thoughts and replied. I really can't hide anything from her at all. I go and sit next to her on the sofa and hug her tightly.

This means I have two days to go until I go to Durden's High School. I wish everything settles how I want it to be.
