Alec POV

"What are you talking about?" Jace was the first one to speak. We were all just standing there, no one moving. So of course Jace was the first to speak. No amount of training or runes could prepare me for what I was about to hear.

My dad sighed, his head bowed, "My real name is Blake Nightshade, not Robert Lightwood. When I was around your age I was a great demon hunter. At that time I was the best of the best. And I enjoyed every kill. I was sort of addicted to it. In my spare time I would track down random demons and slaughter them."

He chuckled, "I was actually known for how brutally I would kill them. I would always toy with them first. Some shadowhunters admired me, while some were actually scared of me. My own father didn't approve of my methods. He always said that we didn't kill demons because we wanted to, but because we had to. One day when I was hunting these demons through the park I saw a girl, a mundane girl. She was the most beautiful person I had ever seen, I was drawn to her."

As he spoke of this girl there was something in his eyes, even in this darkness with just my witchlight I could see it. He loved this girl. He was in love with this girl.

"So I followed her, everyday. I was always in the shadows, never showing myself to her. I probably should have found it odd that she was in the park at night, everyday at the same exact time. I was perched in a tree when she turned around and saw me. Well, she didn't really see me, since I had the rune on. But she still saw me. So the next day I dressed up as a mundane, no runes, no weapons. I approached her while she was sitting on a bench. She was actually waiting for me."

He chuckled again, "We talked, and after that, well you can put the puzzle pieces together. We'd meet, secretly of course, almost everyday. Her name was Emma, Emma Jacobson. We were together for about a year. The first time we said we loved each other was in her bedroom. I went there that night, I don't remember why, but I did."

He stopped then, and it took him a long moment to collect himself. Even before he started I had a feeling that what was coming up next was bad, "That night we slept together. It was both of our first times. A few weeks later when we were in the park walking she told me she was pregnant. I was so happy, even though she was just a mundane. So I decided to tell her who I was, I told her all about shadowhunters. It took her awhile, but eventually she accepted it and we were preparing for our child."

He smiled, "I knew my parents wouldn't approve, but I hoped that they would. So I told them. Not long after that they told The Clave about what I had done. They called a meeting and decided that the baby growing inside of my Emma was valuable to them. So they were going to wait till she gave birth, then kill her. They said she knew too much."

He laughed bitterly, "They said she couldn't be trusted with our secret! So I ran. I got Emma, packed our bags, and we left. It was about a month later when they found us. The Clave had sent out shadowhunters to track me down and drag us back there. I fought, of course, but in the end I wasn't strong enough and they brought us to Alicante. It was decided that I would be stripped of my marks, my baby taken away, and Emma would be killed. I don't know the exact thoughts that ran through my head at that night, there were so many. But I wanted to protect her, and our unborn child. So I-"

He stopped and tears started streaming down his face, "So I broke out of my cell and went into the room they were keeping her in. She was so happy to see me. I lay down in that bed with her, stroked her hair and whispering into her ear about how everything would be alright. When I was sure she was asleep I grabbed my knife and slit her throat."

He was sobbing now, his body shaking and inhumane sounds leaving his mouth, "I held her tighter as she died. The love of my life and mother of my child died in my arms. After that, I ran, again. I left her body in that cold room and ran! I hated myself for it, but I was protecting her. I had been on the run for a few months, never staying in the same place for too long."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Just by looking at the others and seeing how no one has moved an inch since he started speaking tells me they feel the same. This is just so unreal. My dad fell in love with a mundane girl, got her pregnant then killed her. This isn't making any sense. I wanted to question him, but my voice was stuck in my throat.

Magnus squeezed my hand before speaking, "What does any of this have to do with anything?"

"It has to with everything. A few months after I killed Emma a shadowhunter by the name of Robert Lightwood went missing. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for me to become a shadowhunter again. If I was still a shadowhunter then I could forget about Emma and what I did to her. That was the goal."

"So I used a warlock to help me track down Robert. When we found him he was basically dead. So I had the warlock to make his body look like mine and my body look like his. Then he put Robert's memories into my head. I knew what I was doing would get me killed if anyone ever found out so I killed the warlock. I then went on as Robert Lightwood."

"It was all going great for a while, till one night. I was sleeping, and having the most disturbing dreams. I saw dead bodies all around me. I was covered in blood. But the bodies weren't demons, they were mundanes. Innocent mundanes that I had slaughtered. When I woke up from my dream there she was, my beautiful Emma was standing before me. I cried out in joy and ran to her. But my hands went right threw her. I was confused. There was a dark light surrounding her and she was looking at me as if I was the devil."

"She told me I would pay for my sins and that all the blood on my hands could never be washed away. Then she pulled a knife out of thin air and stabbed me in the stomach. I fell to my knees, clutching my stomach. I remember asking her why, but she never answered. Then she came up behind me and slit my throat."

"I woke up still in my bed, and just thought it was a bad dream. I didn't find out until recently what it meant. The knife she used to kill me was laced with a type of poison that changed me. Or the inside of me at least. That is why Damien needs me to create his monster, he needs my blood."

The room was silent.
