Four years later.
"Nat!" Jamie's voice rang through the day care center, and Natalia noticed the cheery 5 year old brown haired boy, waving vigorously at her from the slide in the yard.
"Hi Jamie!" Nat called back, as she greeted the day care supervisor—a middle aged woman ironically named Kat—with a K.
"How was he today?" Natalia asked picking up his small Avengers backpack, and throwing it over her shoulder.
"He's getting on with the other kids better, although," Kat took her aside, "I think he gets sad about his parents." She admitted.
Natalia nodded, feeling the familiar lump rise in her throat. Over the last four years, Jamie learned to walk, and speak without the guidance of his parents—all under Natalia and her and Marco's parents' watchful eye.
Thomas came around when he could, and his visits were always short but sweet. Between training camps, regular competitions, and international duty, his visits were never long and left both of them wanting more. And unfortunately for Natalia, raising a young boy on her own, was no easy feat. Her parents helped when they could, but she was stubborn in raising him and wanted to do everything with her sister in mind—including her dying wish.
"Let's get going, kid!" Natalia called to Jamie who ran to her and agreed to hold her hand as they crossed the street and walked to her nearby flat as he told her about a large worm he unearthed just before her arrival.
Miss you xx a text message from Thomas read.
Miss you more, wish I could see you.
In due time...
Natalia's eyebrows furrowed at the exchange, but she busied herself making supper for Jamie.
"Hi Mama, we're just sitting down for supper," Natalia said answering the phone call from her mother and winking at Jamie who was already putting his fork full of broccoli into his mouth.
"Darling, I just wanted to ask you if you've looked at the mail yet," her mother asked kindly.
"Hold on," Natalia shifter her phone under her shoulder and shuffled through the stack of mail, which included a manila envelope with no return address, "What did you and Papa do," Natalia said shaking her head with a smile.
"Oh open it love," her mother said a smile evident in her voice.
Natalia unclasped the envelope and gasped as a flight itinerary from London to Munich fell out, "Mama what did you do," Natalia repeated, stunned, scanning the ticket that was in her hand, "Mama...you know this says a two week trip, right?"
"Have a wonderful time, darling," her mother said cheekily
"I don't even know if Wenger will let me go!" Natalia protested
"Well it's a good thing he was the one that suggested it," her mother responded.
"Okay, how about you tell me who doesn't know about this," Natalia asked
"Did they tell you about Germany?" Jamie piped in from the kitchen table.
"Mama! You told Jamie?" Natalia squealed walking over to the beaming boy and kissing his head to his protests.
"Yes, and he's very good at secrets!" her mother said laughing, "We'll pick him up in the morning so you have time to pack."
"I love you all, tell Papa thank you too," Natalia said continuing to kiss Jamie's head as she hung up the phone and took a photograph of the ticket and sent it to Thomas.
I can't wait to see you! His response read
Natalia sighed in contentment. She had been hard at work on Arsenal's nutritional team, to make ends meet with Jamie in her care. Marco's parents were especially helpful, but she hated asking, or taking money from Jamie's savings account.
