Several weeks later, Natalia found herself struggling to get a few bags of groceries to Thomas' apartment. He was at training, Jamie was at day care, and Natalia was done with work early. She was lucky Cat was so perky during her pregnancy—Natalia was just lethargic and sore almost all of the time.
Her back ached as she stood in the elevator as she carefully balanced the bags as well as her workbag.
Just as she walked in the door, she felt something in her back give, and white hot pain spread through her back, to her hands causing her to drop everything she was holding.
She inhaled quickly through her nose trying to identify what the hell had just happened internally, and she felt herself break into a sweat.
She sat down at the kitchen table feeling dizzy, and searched her pockets for her phone.
She dialed Thomas' number quickly, and it went to voicemail. Oh fuck. Natalia felt her heart pounding in her ears as she dialed Cat's number.
"Hello?" Cat's cheerful voice flooded the speaker.
"Cat, something is wrong," Natalia said weakly, "I'm at home and I think I'm going to faint."
"Natalia I'm coming, stay put." Cat's voice said seriously hanging up the phone.
Natalia put her head down on the table, welcoming the cool glass against her cheek.
What could have been several hours or several minutes later she heard the door open and saw several German paramedics and Cat walking in. She protested weakly, but was quickly strapped in while Cat rapidly told them her name, age, medical history in German.
Natalia drifted in an out of consciousness throughout the whole drive to the hospital, which was rather nauseating. She felt like she was drunk, throughout the ordeal. When she finally awoke, she saw her mom sitting by her bedside wearing a grim smile, and her dad pacing by the window. She was attached to several machines, and noticed how dark it was outside.
"Mama," Natalia croaked, surprised at the sound of her own voice, and cleared her throat.
"Hi darling," her mom said kissing her forehead and handing her a glass of water.
"Am I, is the baby—"
"Hello Miss. Klein," a tall woman in a white coat walked into her room and shook her hand, "I'm Dr. Wagner. You had a spell of dehydration and exhaustion this afternoon. Can you tell me what day it is?"
"It's July 24th," Natalia said quickly, "Is my baby okay?"
"Well your babies are fine, but you really need to take better care of yourself, Miss Klein. I'm recommending bed rest for a week, and after that only mild activities."
"Jamie, Thomas, Cat are they here?" Natalia asked her parents and the Doctor simultaneously, "Did you say babies?" she asked after a beat, noticing her parents heads also whip around to stare at Dr. Klein.
"Yes ma'am," the doctor said with a confused smile, "I performed an ultrasound and there are two fetuses." she explained.
"I'm having twins..." Natalia said softly to herself, running her hand over her only mildly swollen stomach.
"Jamie is here, but Thomas isn't allowed in. Cat went home when we got here," her mother said comfortingly.
"What? That's ridiculous, why isn't he allowed in?"
"Family only after hours, love," her mother said carefully avoiding eye contact with her daughter.
"Well shit," Natalia cursed quietly.
"When can I leave?" she asked the Doctor who was in the process of taking her temperature.
"I would really like to keep you for observation," Dr. Wagner started to say
"Please, I have a 5 year old nephew, he's probably worried sick," Natalia pleaded, not wanting to stay in the hospital overnight.
"In that case your boyfriend needs to take good care of you tonight," she said in a tone of voice that made her mother look tame.
Natalia nodded vigorously, and sat up slowly in the bed, assisted by the Doctor.
"I'll leave you to get dressed, and I'll tell Thomas about...baby number two" her father said with a smile bowing out and joining Jamie and Thomas in the waiting room, to which Natalia and her mother nodded.
"Thank you, Papa."
Natalia's mother helped her into a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt, no doubt something Thomas brought and into a wheelchair. They were told by the nurse this was hospital policy, and that Natalia wasn't to leave the chair until she was getting into the car.
After signing half a dozen forms, Natalia's mother carefully wheeled her out to the waiting area, where she was instantly ambushed by Jamie.
He silently clambered onto her lap and threw his arms around her neck before bursting into tears.
Natalia felt her own tears spring to her eyes, but kept them at bay as she held him close and stroked the back of his head, before planting a million kisses all over his face.
"Jamie, I'm fine, I'm okay," she said repeatedly to the crying boy.
"Jamie, your mother is very tired, and you need to help her rest tonight, do you understand?" Dr. Wagner said kindly to Jamie after he calmed down enough to pull away from Natalia, but still stayed in her lap. Jamie nodded vigorously as Thomas handed him a tissue, and took a moment to greet Natalia with a kiss.
"Keep her off of her feet, no exercise, no extra movement, no stress for a week. After that take it easy. All of those aches you were feeling were a warning sign to slow down," Dr. Wagner instructed.
"Thank you," Thomas said gruffly, "I'm sorry for getting angry with you earlier." He said quietly, earning a questioning look from Natalia.
"Thomas berated your doctor for not letting him in," Natalia's mother told her in an undertone as she wheeled her to the front of the hospital, where Thomas had already pulled up his car.
"I want to go home with you and Tommo," Jamie said quietly from Natalia's lap, "I promise I'll be good."
Natalia kissed his head again, "I know you will be, go get into the car." She said nudging him off her lap and shooting glares at her father who opened his mouth to insist that they take Jamie for the evening.
"I need to talk to him about this babies thing, tell him none of this was his fault. He's worried it was him," Natalia explained rapidly to the remaining adults. Natalia held Thomas' arm for support as she stood, before they waved her off.
"I'll be by in the morning to help," Natalia's mother said waving goodbye to them as they drove in the warm night back to Thomas' apartment.
When they walked into the home, the groceries had been mysteriously put away and Thomas found a casserole in the refrigerator with a note attached to it.
Love you always, Cat. Heat at 175 C for 15 minutes.
