DAME FLOGAN STREET, MANSFIELD, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Running through the town centre of Mansfield is a huge railway viaduct, completed in 1875, it's an English Heritage grade 2 listed building. What's interesting is that after doing some research, one web site suggested that the viaduct had 13 arch's, whilst another said it had 15. The next time I'm in town, I'll try and count them myself. I also read that it took 1000 men one year to build.

Running alongside the viaduct is a street called White Hart Street, walking up hill, you will come to a street on your left called Dame Flogan Street. Dame Cicely Flogan was a woman that mixed with the rich and noble families of the day and was able to take advantage of such high ranking companions. In her will of 1521 she left a large amount of land and property that was to be used to maintain Mansfield's parish church for 99 years, and in return she would have a priest pray for her for 99 years, plus have the church bells to be rung on each anniversary of her death. Her death was a tragic one, she was dragged a short distance by horse before dying from the injuries she received near her home and within sight of the parish church she loved so much. Her house was one of the more grand houses in the area. Her home bore the name 'Harte' and since its demolition, the 'White Hart' pub now stands in its place. Her ghost is said to haunt white Hart Street and Dame Flogan Street. The White Hart pub also has had many sightings of unexplained visitors. One of the rooms upstairs is constantly cold regardless of how high the heating is turned up, to the point one landlord used to keep perishable foods in there so that they would keep longer. One landlords dog used to stand at the bottom of the stairs that work their way down into the bar area and bark vigorously at some unseen entity. A misty shape has also been seen coming down the same stairs and entering the pub. Whether it is a man or woman nobody knows, but the site has had hundreds of years of human habitation, it could be anyone who lived or died there. The pub is now up for sale.
