VICIOUS CYCLE

XIV

The following day, it was late afternoon. Starr was sat in the hospital ward where her mother was recovering from the brutal attack she sustained from her husband. Starr had a carrier bag with her – a few necessities were inside. She also had a teddy bear with a ‘get well soon’ card. A nurse then approached Starr

“Hello Ms Scott” The nurse smiled “Your mother will see you now”

“Thank you” Starr smiled as she rose to her feet. She then followed the nurse

Starr then got to her mother’s hospital bed. Her mother had bruises on her face, and her neck was in a neck brace. Starr choked back tears, as her mother was battered but recovering. She then ran to her mother and gave her a hug

“Darling, it’s alright, it’s alright” Starr’s mother smiled as they separated. Starr mirrored her smile

“Well Mrs Lester, I…” The nurse begun

“Sorry to cut you, its Ms Scott now” Starr’s mother began “I’m going to get a divorce”

“Very well, my mistake” the nurse begun “Well, your bruises should clear in the next week or so. You will be in that brace for about three weeks; hopefully we can give you the all-clear on your return”

“Thank you, nurse. I’d like to have a moment with my child” Ms Scott declared

“No problem at all” The nurse smiled before she walked away. Starr grabbed a seat and pulled it next to her mother’s bedside. She then took a seat

“You’re looking well, darling” Ms Scott smiled “You been eating well?”

“I’m fine, Mum” Starr declared “Just fine. How have you been?”

Starr’s mother produced a sigh as she sat more upright on her bed

“The last few days have really made me reflect…I think I got involved with a monster”

“Now you clock on…” Starr took a deep breath “I have been telling you this forever, he was always gonna be bad news. You always chose him over me”

“Honey, that ain’t true” Ms Scott argued

“Mum, it is. In fact, do you remember when Kevin got his legs broken, and he was wheelchair bound?”

“Yes…I do, why do you ask?” Ms Scott asked curiously

“Mum…” Starr sarcastically smiled as she thought of what she was about to say “It was down to me”

“What? How…” Ms Scott asked

“I got some of my friends to attack him because when I was younger he was violent towards me. Why you considered it to be ‘discipline’ I would never know. For Goodness’ sake, Mum, the idiot was in anger management four bloody times! You still took him back and didn’t care about how I felt”

“That’s not true, of course it was discipline! You weren’t exactly an angel, were you?” Ms Scott argued “He would never intentionally hurt you. In more ways than one, he loved you like he was your father”

“Bullshit” Starr rolled her eyes in disagreement

“Excuse me, Michaela Destiny Scott?” Ms Scott growled in anger and disgust with her daughter’s firmness “What did you just say?”

“I really don’t mean to be rude to you, Mum…But he caring about me is bullshit. That’s all I can say, I won’t even say ‘He had a funny way of showing it’ the guy was one crazy lunatic, drunkard. All he cared about was football and alcohol. I’m sure he took drugs as well”
