The Letter

I woke up, thinking of a land that once was. I missed my friends in Oz. I love the people in Kansas, my family, the farmhands. But it'd been a long time since I've been to Oz. I wondered if Scarecrow was well. And Tinman and Lion. And Glinda. And those munchkins. Now that all the wicked witches are dead, they should be well, right?

"Dorothy!" Aunt Em shouted from the kitchen.

"Coming, Aunt Em!" I shouted back as I'm putting my dress on. I go to the kitchen and shake the thoughts of Oz from my head. I wasn't even sure that Oz is real. It could've been just a dream. But it had felt so real.

"Oh, good morning, Toto." I said, looking down at him as he brushes against my legs.

He wagged his tail and panted as he looked up at me.

We continued our way to the kitchen together.

"Oh there you are, Dorothy," Aunt Em said. "I'm expecting some mail. Could you go fetch it, please?"

"Sure thing, Auntie Em!" I said before running out the door and to the end of the driveway where our mailbox is.

Sure enough, there was a letter for Auntie Em. But there was also a letter for me. The handwriting was pretty awful so I wondered who it was from. Especially since I never get mail.

"Here's your mail, Auntie Em." I said, handing her the envelope.

"Thanks, dear. Oh, what's that you've got there?"

"It's a letter for me. But I haven't got a clue who it's from."

"Well, open it up, then. It's not every day that Miss Dorothy Gale receives a letter."

I smiled and ripped open the letter.

Dear Dorothy,

Sorry about my handwriting. I'm new to the writing world since I got my brain. Oz hasn't been the same since you left. At first, it was great. The wicked witches are dead and Tinman, Lion, and I rule Oz. But recently, the witch of the south came to visit. You see, she used to be a good witch but something turned her wicked. No one knows what, not even Glinda.

Dorothy, we need your help. We need you to try and come back to Oz.

Your friend,

Scarecrow

P.S. Tinman, Lion, and I miss you something awful. We love you, Dorothy. We miss you and can't wait to see you when you find your way back.
