Sunday November 29th
The first thing Pete did when he got out of bed was look in the mirror and sigh at the blurred image staring back at him, he could make out the eye and hair colour (and the gender, however Pete was not going to talk about that) but nothing else. A few months into his freshman year at high school is when it started getting clearer, and still he had no idea who it was. He hadn't hung out with anyone new in high school, so it might be someone in his class but the question is who it was.
Obviously he couldn't determine the person based on hat and eye colour only, and he really didn't want to try. Pete was afraid.
Afraid of the idea of a soulmate, afraid of the risks that come with it. Afraid of his soulmate and himself. It was like this constant overwhelming anxiety and dread that follows him around, dragging him down and soaking him in rain.
No escape. Pete thought as he ran a hand through his hair, pushing it back. He quickly got changed and, with a with a quick goodbye to his mom, was on his way to the skate park where his friends (Patrick, Brendon and Ashley) were probably waiting for him to show up. And sure enough, they were.
With Brendon, was a slightly feminine looking guy that Pete hadn't seen before. The Unknown boy had a bright red blush practically painted on his face as he stared down at their hands that were intertwined together. Pete thought it was pretty cute how Brendon was fucking staring and smiling at the boy like he made the world turn and hung the stars in the sky.
"Took your time." Ashley giggled, taking out a packet of cigarettes, then leaning on the metal skate ramp behind her. Some of her blue dyed hair flopping down onto her face bodies she pushed it behind her ear again.
"Hey Halsey," Pete smiled at her, she was pretty much the only one who Pete wouldn't get sick of if they both hung out for a long time. Pete also nodded to Brendon and Patrick, before turning to the boy. "Hey," he smiled. "I'm Pete."
"R- Ryan." The boy said timidly, stepping a little closer to Brendon, who kissed his forehead in response and Ryan giggled, blushing again.
"I found out yesterday that he's my soulmate." Brendon smiled to no one in particular.
Pete took out a packet of cigarettes and a lighter from his back pocket, before going sitting on the bench, that was conveniently near where they all stood, next to Patrick. "Soulmates, huh?" Pete spoke after taking in a breath of smoke and exhaling it again. The whole topic of soulmates made Pete uncomfortable and only Patrick knew that, so at the mention of soul mates Patrick looked up from their phone and at their best friend, a worried look on their face.
Brendon, Ryan and Ashley continued their conversation while Patrick took him slightly aside, just enough so the others couldn't hear what they were saying.
"You okay?" Patrick asked in a hushed tone, glancing back and forth between Pete and the others.
Pete hummed in response. "I'm great."
"Liar." Patrick retorted, rolling their eyes at Pete. "You never told me why you don't like the mention of soulmates."
"I'm afraid, Patrick." Pete basically whispered and Patrick raised their eyebrows and gesturing for him to carry on what he was saying. "I'm afraid of who h- she is."
Patrick was sure Pete thought Patrick didn't hear him nearly slip up, but they did. Sighing, Patrick spoke again. "Pete, if it's a boy it's fine."
Pete was a stuttering mess now, tripping over every one of his words. "W- what do y- you mean a boy. Of cour- I mean what m- makes you t- think that." Patrick once again sighed.
"Pete I swear to god, it's a boy isn't it." Pete bowed his head down, looking at his hands and slowly nodding. "And what's so wrong with that? Brendon has Ryan and that's fine."
"My mom made me feel shit about it once I told her a few years back. She told me that it wasn't right, and I'm so fucking scared that I'm disappointing her. It's not right."
"It's perfectly fine Pete." At this point, Pete was frantically shaking his head and standing up, backing away.
"It's not!" Pete shouted, catching the attention of their friends.
Patrick grabbed the shoulders of their best friend and looked straight into his eyes. "Pete. It's fucking fine. Look into my eyes, it's fine." Patrick was speaking louder and holding onto Pete's shoulders in case he runs away because Patrick needed to tell him straight. "Pete, I'm gonna tell you something that I've told no one else. I'm aromantic and asexual, and I feel fine, I don't think it's wrong and it's the same with your soulmate being a boy. It's not unnatural or wrong."
"Maybe you feel fine, but I don't." Pete said as he backed away before turning and running up the path and around the corner. Patrick sighed, watching him run before turning back to Brendon, Ryan and Ashley.
