Scavenger Hunt (Louis Tomlinson)

“….I am Miguel, and this is Tulio! And they call us…MIGUEL AND TULIO!”

“You don’t say….” I muttered sarcastically under my breath, making those around me laugh. It was the last day of school, and I sat quietly at the back of my Spanish class, patiently waiting for the bell as I continued to make sarcastic comments about the silly child’s movie we were watching to fill time. As the bell sounded, I grabbed my bag, and waited for the horrendous clump of people to move out of the doorway.

Since apparently no one saw the need to get to fifth period on time, I turned to one of my dear friends, Louis, to chat. It was small talk, really, but it made me happy just to see him smile and watch him tell me about his summer plans. The conversation switched to my plans as we walked up the stairs and around the corner to where the conversation would end. He smiled at me in farewell as he ducked into his English class and I pushed my way through the crowded hallway to my locker. Spinning the combination with ease, I wondered what the summer would bring. It seemed my summer would be relaxing, working at a camp for a week or so, but no real plans. I wondered if I would see Louis. Surely I would. We’d become pretty good friends, right? Then again, one could never tell. Louis wasn’t the typical popular boy, but everyone loved him.

He treated everyone as if they were the most important thing, which is only one of his many amazing attributes. I smiled, reminiscing the many times he was the one to put a smile on my face this school year alone. I let my mind ponder the stories, the inside jokes, the horrible teachers, the straining assemblies, the club meetings, all of which had been made entertaining by this one boy. My feet found the familiar path to my World History class, where everything Mr. Weesinger was saying about a safe summer went in one ear & out the other. Everything in my last period class went by in a blur, yearbook signings, hugs goodbye, empty promises of getting together, until the final bell rang.

I walked back upstairs to my shared locker, where it seemed Megan, my locker buddy, had already cleared out her stuff. I smiled at the sweet post-it note she left on my locker door, wishing me a great summer. To be honest there wasn’t much to clean out. The books had been retired to the library, and all my notepads had been stacked neatly on my desk at home yesterday afternoon. Now what was left were the little things, the pictures of my best friend and I on my miniature bulletin board at the back of my locker, little pieces of wrappers, or numbers jotted down on scraps notebook paper, which never did seem to find a way to my iPhone.

The only thing that was new, however, was an envelope with my name scrawled in black ink on top. I glanced around at those who were left, wondering who this could possibly be from. I tore the paper, only to find a small card that read:

“Clue #1: Roses are read, violets are blue, everything beautiful reminds me of you.”

My brain worked as if in two separate compartments, one part of me blushing like mad, heartbeat racing, wondering who this could possibly be. The other part cursing this person for sending me on a scavenger hunt.

I sighed, stuck the note in my back pocket, scooped up the scraps in my locker, and tossed them in the trash. After putting my bulletin board into my bag, I shut my locker for the last time and began to wonder what this was reffering to. A place in the school, obviously. Roses…violets…beautiful…. FLOWERS. Where did we have flowers? Out front, down by the soccer fields, the horticulture building.. I made my way down to the school entrance, wondering if there would be another clue, or if I would find out who the mystery guy is. As I stepped out into the warm June sun, I saw no one who appeared to be waiting for me. I walked past the flower beds, looking for more envelopes, or slips of paper. Nothing.

I turned and headed in the direction of the horticulture building, figuring it was the closest to me, and it was on the way to the soccer fields so I might as well. The building was much like an upgraded greenhouse, with it’s own courtyard that the students keep clean & attended to year round. It was very cute, with little pots of flowers all around, and a small round table at the center. That’s when I noticed the next slip of paper. It sat upon the table, gleaming under the sun, almost blinding. That little piece of my brain that was annoyed melted away as I thought about how much thought must have gone into this. Who would care that much about me? Cupping my hand over the note to hide it from the sun, I read it.

“Clue #2: It kills me that I’m not your one and only. But as they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you STRONGER.”

Stronger… Well, there’s really only one place that could be: the weight room. I made my way back into the school, past the principals hurrying kids off school grounds, and down the stairs to where the weight room was. Taped to the door of the locked weight room, was another slip of paper. This one reading:

“Clue #3: Juliet, dear Juliet… Where for art thou, Juliet?”

Shakespeare? Wow, this guy was cheesy. Nevertheless I marched back up the stairs, taking them two at a time, to the open double doors of the theater. It was dark, the vague shapes of the video camera & rows of chairs outlined. Had I thought wrong? Was he not referring to the theater?

Just when I turned to leave, a loud click sounded, along with a large beam of light illuminating a small circle of the stage. I took a step closer, confused. That’s when Louis stepped into the spotlight, holding a single red rose.

“(Y/N),” he said, “There’s no simpler way to say this, no more clues: I love you. I love the way you keep a positive attitude, the way you notice the little things, the things nobody else would, and make the best out of them. I love the way you care about people, about this school. I love seeing your confidence when you take the microphone in an assembly. The way your eyebrows furrow when you can’t quite get a problem right in chemistry. I love seeing the sassy side of you when Mrs. Mitchell gets pissed at you in Spanish for no reason. I love the way you laugh at life. The way you smile at everyone, but especially when you smile at me. I love knowing I made you laugh. Because it’s in those moments I feel nothing bad could ever happen. I don’t want anything to ever happen to you, (Y/N). I want to be the one that’s there for you. Your shoulder to cry on, your best friend. I want to spend this summer with you, and I can’t imagine it any other way. So… Will you allow me to be that person?”

My vision blurred, tears threatening to ruin my make up, as I walked forward to the stage, nodding, and reaching out to hug him. I loved the feeling of him holding me. I loved the idea of being his, and him being mine. I just loved him.

I pulled away a bit, and looked up into his mesmerizing Mediterranean Sea blue eyes and whispered “I love you too.” I watched his face light up as he leaned down to kiss me. The kiss was perfect. It was everything I dreamed it would be. Our noses didn’t bump, and it was as if our lips were made for each other, fitting perfectly with one another. His arms around my waist, and mine around his neck. Just…just perfect.

And I knew this summer would be too.
