A blank look covered Gina's face as she unknowingly dropped her coffee, spilling it all over the tablecloth and shattering the coffee cup. The several people shifted their gaze to the two women, and Candace shrunk back in shame.
"Well... that was unexpected " Gina said, in a voice which was a little too cheerful considering the news she just received.
Candace searched Gina's eyes for any indication of what she was thinking. Nothing. Gina's eyes showed no emotion and the maniacal grin on her face didn't help.
"Gina, it meant nothing. I'm so sorry. I would've never done it...".
"Oh Candace, sweetheart. There's no need to apologize. All you simply did was sleep with my husband. That is not a crime. You have every right. He's smart, handsome, rich. It would be a crime not to sleep with him. Married or not ".
Candace found it odd that the statement wasn't dripping with sarcasm. It was eirely genuine, as if she somehow believed what she was saying.
" Look, Gina. Im not proud of what I've done and I do not expect you to forgive me at all. As a matter of fact, I don't want you to forgive me. I should live with this shame that I have put on upon myself. I have wronged my husband and I have wronged you. I betrayed a trust that may now understandably not be redeemable ".
Gina slowly stood up. "Don't worry about it, Candy. In my eyes you've done nothing wrong". She turned heading to leave but turned back for a quick second. "You've got the check right? Thanks. I'm running low on money". She wheeled around and calmly exited the cafe.
Candace sat at the table alone. She felt somewhat relieved that things didn't go as she had imagined. But she was scared. Gina's reaction was far from what she had expected and she expressed a very pleasant facade that seemed too good to be true. Then there was the maniacal grin, and her blank expression. Candace ' s stomach churned as an uneasy feeling in her stomach arose. She could sense something dark was coming for her. She just didn't what it was.
