This might not sound that important, but you need to be able to do this. This is also for fiction genres so make sure you're listening. Depending on the genre you're writing, you'll have to give your audience what they're expecting.
For instance, if you're writing a thriller, your characters need to be trying to stop whatever it is that needs to have been stopped. But if you're writing a mystery, you need to reveal the crime early and have the whole 'whodunnit' for the rest of the book.
This is actually one of the things that should be an unspoken rule and should be taken to heart. It's like the Writer's Law. It has to be followed.
