This is probably one of the most difficult things I've had to learn in writing a book, and I generally just choose to rewrite my sentence a different way rather than have to choose between the two. But here's some tips that might be able to help you out when deciding which form is the right one to use.
Remember: The past tense of lie is lay and the past tense of lay is laid.
That probably didn't help huh.
Well, you might want to try this.
If you go into fetal position, you lie down. You lay down if you had gone into fetal position yesterday. If there's an object, such as a book, you lay it down. If you had done that the day before, you had laid it down.
No? Still don't get it?
Here's the tip that helped me understand then.
You lie, you recline. You lay, you place.
Lie- Recliiiine
Lay- Plaaaace
"As I lie in bed, I lay my watch on the nightstand."
