Chapter Five

Gemma looked through her hair thinking how unfair the world was why did her mum and Eliza had to die, She didn’t think anyone else could sleep either “is anyone actually asleep?” She asked out into the dark “no I don’t think so” She heard Michael reply, they all sat up and Michael turned a torch on. Everyone was awake except Ethan, but Gemma thought he was faking because he probably wanted some time to sit there and think by himself “what’s our next move? This food cant last us forever!” Audrey Said looking worried “well we can go scavenging?” Gemma suggested, “We need more people there’s only six of us” Ruben said “and what happens when all of the food in Australia runs out?” James said chewing on his nails, there was a long silence no one knew what to do. They couldn’t hunt, which means they would have to start growing crops. “Well maybe if-“ Ruben was interrupted by James “shhhh, listen!” they all stopped and listened Gemmas heard a small sound but she wasn’t sure what it was then she heard it again ‘meow’ “IT’S A CAT!” Gemma screamed, everyone jumped up and grabbed their weapons ready for attack. They waited and waited but there wasn’t one, Gemma switched her torch on and looked around the room and found a small kitten sitting at the door. She raised her knife the realised it didn’t have any pus, blood and it wasn’t even hissing it just stood there looking at her, ‘meow’ Gemma carefully walked up to the small kitten. It came up to her so she quickly got her knife ready but then to her surprise it started rubbing its self against her leg and purring, Gemma carefully lifted it up and held it in front of her. She looked and noticed that around its neck was a blue collar she looked closer and read its collar that said ‘Cookie’ Gemma smiled at it, the cat was brown with a little bit of white on its face and had dark brown patterns on its fur. She held it to her, then she felt a warm liquid on her hand “oh that gross” But when she looked at it, it was red. She searched the cat from where it had come and found a long cut on one of its back legs. She quickly ran back to the base with Cookie in one hand and the torch and knife in the other, as soon as she entered the room everyone pulled out their knifes “Gemma! What are you doing! Put it down, it will bite you!” Ethan said quickly, he must have got up when he heard about the deranged animal “no its fine!” Gemma said holding the kitten tightly to protect it from the knifes “How do you know its fine Gemma! I don’t want to lose you too!” Ethan started yelling, “Give me a look” Ruben said stretching out his arms “No! You’re going to kill it!” Gemma said angrily “trust me” Ruben said looking into her eyes, Gemma carefully handed the kitten over to him and watched as Ruben held it to his face and looked carefully at the blood “look at the blood” Ruben said, everyone walked over to him “what about it? Its just normal blood?” Audrey said confused “exactly! Its normal not thick and a deep red, which means it wasn’t got the virus” Ruben said smiling at the kitten, Gemma shot Ethan a angry look to show that she was pissed off at him for not believing her, Ruben gave Cookie back to her and she held her tightly as if Cookie was the only thing she cared about.

Audrey sat down with Gemma patting the kitten “do we have any food for her?” Audrey said looking at the thin kitten “well we might have some mince meat?” Gemma looked uncertain, it was obvious she didn’t have much experience with cats. Audrey grew up with cats so new heaps about them “yeah that will be fine” Audrey sat there with the kitten stroking its soft fur; she missed her cats she hoped they were okay. Gemma came back with three different packets of mince meats “whoa! That’s great it could last Cookie for weeks” Gemma smiled and handed the meat to her, Audrey ripped a piece of the mince meat up then ripped it up into small pieces. Gemma sat there watching every move she did, like her life depended on it, at first Cookie was nervous about accepting the food but Audrey kept encouraging her and eventually Cookie happily accepted the food. “She’s very cute” Gemma stroked Cookies back gently, someone tapped on Audrey’s back and when she turned around she saw Michael “what’s up?” She asked, “Come over here” He said quietly Audrey took one last look at the cat and left to where Michael was “yeah?” she asked “These guys have no idea what they are doing. I asked Ruben to come but he said he wants to stay” Audrey looked at him, was being serious? “Wait what? You’re going to leave?” She said “yeah its best. I would probably be better without these guys, but if you want you can come” He said looking at her pleadingly “Where would we go?” she asked “anywhere” Audrey thought about it and then remembered her cats all five of them, Cookies alive so maybe her cats were too “could we go to my house?” She looked at him for an answer but he didn’t say anything “It would be quick! I just wana get my cats, they are the only thing left now that my mum and dad are dead, so they mean a lot to me” Audrey said “okay but only if you promise that after we go to your place you will come with me. I need someone like you, you’re a good fighter” Audrey shook his hand and walked off to go pack her stuff.

Ethan sat there thinking about how angry Gemma was at him, he felt really bad for wanting to kill an innocent kitten. Ethan looked up and found Audrey and Michael heading towards the door with backpacks on. He knew Audrey would agree to go with Michael. “Where are you going?” Gemma stood up with cookie in her arms looking suspiciously at them “we’re leaving” Michael said “But what about Cookie? Im not good with cats!” Gemma said to Audrey “Just follow your instincts and you will be fine, you’re a smart girl Gemma” Audrey winked and then walked out “are you going Ruben?” James asked “nah, your stuck with me kiddo” He smiled.

Michael was happy to leave he never liked Gemma or James; they gave him shivers down his spine. Michael looked up at the bright sun, the weather was getting really hot “which way then?” He asked her “Back down the road” She said pointing to their left.

They walked down the burning road Michael looked up at the sound of a incoming car so they stepped off the road, but the car stopped and a women got out, she had long black hair and olive skin “hey you! Do u want a ride to where ever you’re going?” She asked “umm yeah sure? Why not” Audrey said unsure. Michael Jumped into the car with Audrey “so where are you guys going? Oh im Dave by the way and that’s Maddy” The bald man driving the car said to them, Maddy looked at them and smiled “im Audrey and this is Michael, we are heading to 44 Railway Avenue Stanmore” Audrey said nicely “oh that’s very close to where we live!” Maddy said surprised. Michael didn’t like these people and wanted to get out the car as soon as possible but didn’t want to be rude “do you mind if we quickly drop by our house for something to eat we are starving, you guys look hungry too” Dave asked “sure go ahead” Audrey replied.

They reached Dave and Maddys house it was very big “come inside and I can get you something to eat” Maddy said smiling, Michael looked at her she seemed kind, a little too kind though. They all walked inside, Audrey and Michael took their backpacks off and put them next to the door “come up here I want to show you this really awesome room we decorated the other day!” Dave said enthusiastically, Michael walked at the back until they reached the room up the top of the stair case “go have a look” Dave said still smiling, Michael walked in after Audrey and looked around the room that was completely bare “what the-“ Michael got interrupted by a loud slam the both turned around and saw the door was shut and they could hear Dave locking it “Stranger Danger, thought you would have learnt about it when you were young!” Dave said laughing “LETS US OUT!” Michael yelled at him “Michael look” Michael turned around and saw That Audrey was pointing at a large dog sitting in the corner of the room, he looked around and noticed how idiotic these people were there was a window wide open, probably for the dog to get fresh air, it must be a pet. Michael pointed to the window and Audrey worked it out straight away, but so did the dog. It ran towards them showing off its sharp teeth “RUN!” Michael shouted to Audrey, He was running towards the window but it was too late the dog had latched its teeth into his leg “Michael!” Audrey Said looking at him “GO!” Michael yelled, he brought her into this so he had to get her out of it. Audrey did what she was told and jumped out the window, Michael Was struggling to free himself and had Sweat running down his face, The dog tripped him and then looked at his face teasingly dripping blood on his face that was coming from its mouth. That was the last thing he ever saw.
