The Cries

Chapter ten

Gemma woke, because someone was tapping her shoulder. She opened her eyes and found Thomas with tears rolling down his face “what’s wrong?” Gemma said sitting up “I had a nightmare and a bad headache” He said whimpering, Gemma brought him into a hug “maybe I can find some painkillers” She said trying not to wake anyone. Thomas sat down onto her sleeping bag, she got up to find some Painkillers when she remembered she had some in her bag. She searched through all the pockets and finally found them, she opened it up and gave one to Thomas “I don’t have any water with me so can you try and swallow it by itself?” Gemma asked handing him the tablet, she watched and Thomas bent back his head to swallow the tablet. Then she noticed how Purple his vains were on his neck, and began thinking about Mutes, no it couldn’t be! Not Thomas, im sure he’s had the injection! “can I sleep next to you?” He said looking at her hopefully “I don’t really have enough room, but you can ask if you could sleep next to Audrey, im sure she would love a cuddle!” Gemma said smiling at the tired little boy, he nodded and walked off into the dark. Gemma lay back down and curled up into a small ball, she hated Ethan for dying, she missed him so desperately! But she had to move on and forget about the past, just like she did with mum. She remembered mum saying that she was going to be fine, but she wasn’t and neither were they. They were stuck in Australia to try and survive something that is impossible. but maybe there’s a cure? Maybe she would only have to stay alive for one more year! They would have found a cure by then shouldn’t they? But then again adults are nearly extinct, and they are the scientists not kids.

She sat up fast to a scream, she tried looking around but she couldn’t see anything because it too dark “Holy shit something wet just touched me!” Brook screamed, Gemma reached into her sleeping bag and got her knife out. She waved it around hopelessly in the air. Then she heard it, a loud hiss filled the room “ANDREW PUT THE LIGHT ON QUICK!!” Ruben yelled across the room “WHAT DO YOU THINK IM TRYING TO DO!! I CANT FIND IT!!” Andrew yelled back “I’ll help” Gemma said slowly backing up to the wall, she felt up the walls surface to find a slight lump but it was hopeless searching for it in pitch black. Something grabbed her arm, she screamed as she felt the things hot breath on her neck. She held her knife tightly and stabbed the creature before it could bite her “I think I got it!” She yelled out into the darkness, then there was anther hiss “There’s more!?” She heard Alene yell out, suddenly the room flickered a the light turned on. Gemma turned around to see what she had stabbed, and it wasn’t a Mute at all! It was Tilly, Tilly lay on the ground holding her stomach trying to take in any oxygen. But Gemma could tell it was no use because she had hit right it the middle of lungs, Gemma dropped to the floor trying to help Tilly but she was losing blood fast “oh god im so sorry Tilly, im so sorry!” Gemma said with her eyes filling up with tears “Gemma look out!” She heard Adrian yell, she turned around and found Thomas with blood pouring out of his mouth and his eyes filled with pink goo. Ruben came up from behind Thomas and stabbed his back. Then everyone stopped, she looked around and realised the person who had screamed, it was Audrey. She had a massive bite on her neck and she was completely pale, she was a goner. She turned around and realised Tilly had given in because her body lied lifeless at her feet “thanks Ruben” She said still looking down at Tilly “don’t mention it” He said with his face pale. Sasha, Claire, Lizzy and Jessica ran into the room and looked around “shit…” Claire said with her eyes wide open, Then Claire quickly pulled out her knife and looked around “its okay he’s gone now” Brook said “what do you mean he’s gone?” Lizzy said narrowing her eyes Brook pointed down at Thomas who had thick blood puddled around his body.

 Sasha wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to come here, she was thinking about leaving but she knew that the others wouldn’t come. Could she really leave? Yes she could! And she was going to, she looked up at the sun shinning high up in the sun and began walking to go get her jumper and knife. She climbed up into the tree until she came to her branch. She decided she wasn’t going to tell anyone otherwise it would just make I harder, she picked up her jumper and put her knife into her bag. She jumped skilfully out of the tree and began walking towards the front gate “where are you going?” She turned around and found Adrian standing there looking at her curiously “im leaving” she mumbled “your what!” He said with his eyes wide, she looked at him sorrily. She wasn’t sure but she felt like she cared about him! “look im sorry, but its better off” She said not looking at him. Adrian walked up to her and held her hand “well then f you really are going to leave there’s one thing I would like to do” He said looking into her eyes. then he held her face and kissed her, but it was more than a kiss! Sasha had never kissed anyone before, she couldn’t help herself she had to kiss back. She pulled away after five seconds and looked at him “wait how old are you?” she said “seventeen, why?” He said “im only fourteen!” She said laughing slightly “whoa really? You look older” He said shocked “But that doesn’t matter does it?” Sasha said worried “when there are Mutes on the lose I don’t think people will worry about a seventeen year old dating a fourteen year old” He said smirking, maybe she did like him. After all she did kiss him back, She should at least give him a chance “alright im staying now” She said smiling at him.

She watched as two figures were running towards the zoo “umm Adrian, come here” She said still watching the figures running towards them “what?” He said coming up and holding her hand, she pointed forward “open the gates!” He said quickly. They both started opening the gates until they realised that it wasn’t just two people but there were also nine Mute dog’s running behind them, Sasha looked at him with a worried look on his face “Everyone help open the gates! Once the two people run in close them straight away!” He shouted ad everyone immediately got up “are you insane!?” Brook said as the Mutes got closer “yeah I think so, but we cant just leave them to die!” He said worried, everyone began pulling away at the locks covering the gate, there were about eleven. “Hey that’s Miffy and Paris!” Claire shouted, Sasha looked closer at the figures and Claire was right that was Miffy and Paris! Sasha had known them from school. Andrew ran up to the gate “PARIS!?” He said eyes wide, Sasha felt sorry for the poor guy. She had heard the whole storie about how Paris (is sister) died. “Andrew this is a different Paris” Lizzy said pulling him back.

Paris and Miffy burst into the zoo, and everyone got to work before the Mutes got in. Sasha locked as many as she could but then the Mutes got there and began barking at them on the other side of the gate. Claire ran forward with Alene and began stabbing them with spears through the cracks in the gate “hehe! Die suckers!” Claire yelled widely. Sasha turned her attention to Paris and Miffy who were breathing hard and their faces completely red; miffy stroked back her red hair, which matched her face. Miffy originally had brown hair but she dyed it for some unknown reason, same as Paris who originally had brown hair now had black hair. Saffron handed them some water each and they slugged it back. They must have been running for a long time because Paris’s fringe was drenched with sweat “thankyou so much!” Paris said in between gasps for air.

 Claire looked at Miffy “should I?” She said scared of the scissors “Trust me, you will feel so much better!” Miffy said with her blue eyes shinny in the sun light “okay, do it” Claire said shutting her eye’s tightly.
