Chapter eight

“how many people died?” Brook asked, she studied the new environment. They all sat in a small convenient shop that hardly stored any food “two” Ruben said not looking up “wait who died?” Andrew said walking into the room with his face covered in water “Zach an Ethan” Ruben said, Brook knew he was trying to hold back tears. She felt really sorry for him, she would hate to be the leader. But if Ruben died she might have to, because Gemma was emotionally unstable and wouldn’t be a good idol. She really liked Ruben, she was thinking about starting a relationship with him but she didn’t want to get close to anyone. She got up and went across to Gemma who was still crying in a corner, She put her arm around Gemma “everyone’s got to die eventually” She said trying to comfort her. Gemma looked at her and smiled “thanks for trying to comfort me. If the world wasn’t like this I would probably be good friends with you, but im not going to get close to anyone anymore” Gemma said to her “what about James?” Brook looked across the room at James who was talking to Jazz, it was cute how well they got along even if she was three years younger than him “I love him because he’s my brother but I have never got along with him. Its not like we fight all the time its more like we just never talk to each other, he even went to a different school” Gemma said also looking at James.

 

Brook woke up, lying next to Gemma. They had been talking all night, She looked to see if anyone else was awake but the only person was Ruben who must have been awake for a long time because he was sitting there planning out everything “So when we get up there we need to turn left and then we are there” he said, At first Brook thought he was talking to her but then she realised he was on the phone “oh okay, wow that was quicker than I thought!” Ruben said smiling, he noticed Brook was watching and he held up his thumb to say that it was all good “alright see you tonight Audrey, bye” he hung up and looked at her “we will be safe tonight!” Ruben said smiling “wait so we are going to get to the zoo tonight?” Brook said confused “yep” Ruben said smiling widely. Brook couldn’t believe it, they were nearly there at the safe haven! Brook ran to Ruben and hugged him tightly , she looked up at him and he kissed her! Brook was shocked at first she was kissing him back but then she stepped back and looked at him “sorry” He said quickly “no it not you it just me, I cant risk falling for someone” she said trying not to look at Ruben in the eyes “you’re a very smart girl” Ruben said as if he was trying to read her mind to see if she was lying.

 Saffron hated the world for what it had done to them, she didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything she just wanted to lie there and forget that everything even existed. But they had to move on and make it to the zoo, so she had to get up and pack her stuff again and go walking through the hot sun again. She could swear it was getting hotter each day! She got up onto her aching legs and began packing everything, she looked at her phone and wondered where ever she should call her older sister Jessica and ask hows she’s going, what if she wasn’t even alive anymore? Saffron went through her contacts and found her sister, should she really do it? She pressed call and waited finally someone answered it was a young voice “hello?” the girl said “Umm hi is jess there?” Saffron asked into the phone “umm.. who is this?” The voice said “Her sister! Now could you hurry up and hand the phone to Jessica. NOW!” She yelled into the phone “alright, take a chill pill” Saffron listened carefully into the phone but all she could hear was mumbling “hey Saf sorry about Claire, what’s up?” Jessica said “what isn’t up!” Saffron said rolling her eyes “oh right the silencers” Jessica said quietly “silencers?” Saffron was getting really confused “oh you probably call them something else, I mean the animals” its funny how everyone calls them different things Saffron thought “anyway, I hope your okay maybe we could meet up sometime?” Jessica suggested “yeah that sounds good, alright just checking your okay so im going to go now, bye” Saffron hung up quickly not wanting to continue the conversation because it just reminded her of what was really going on in the world, but maybe it wasn’t the world maybe it was just Australia, could that be true?
