Chapter six

Ruben watched with envy as Ethan sat with Gemma talking and laughing they must have made up, he wished Sophie was here. He missed her, they had been going out for three years and he thought he was going to marry her even if he is only seventeen, his birthday was only two weeks away but he wouldn’t be able to celebrate it with his mum or dad. They got themselves killed because of him, they told him to run and he listened he should of helped and fought with them maybe they would still be alive “Ruben, are you the leader now that Eliza is… gone?” James asked looking down at him on the floor “umm I guess?” He replied sleepily suddenly there was a loud bang “The door! We didn’t block it!” Gemma yelled eyes wide with terror, Ruben got up and grabbed a big knife and slowly crept towards the door of the hide out “James stay behind us!” Ethan yelled and followed Ruben; he heard a distance sound, “everyone be quiet! I can hear something!” He whispered loudly, everyone stood there in silence “Hello!?” the voice said, it was a small girls voice “Hello!?” Ruben said back “Rowan someone there!” The girls voice said, there was a loud rumble of voices “Everyone be quiet!!” A deep loud voice yelled, then everything went silent “I order you to come out!” the the deep voice said “You come here mate, this is our territory!” Ruben shouted at the top of his lungs “Fine!” The deep voice snapped back.

Ethan was startled at the sound of footsteps coming up towards to entry, he looked at the first figure who entered the room, he had massive muscles bulging out everywhere, he had dried blood stuck on his olive skin and some through his black hair. He must have been their leader, Rowan “What do you want?” Ethan said stepping forward seeing how much taller he was than him , he was only slightly taller “this is your boss!? He looks about fourteen” Rowan said laughing, Ethan glared at him “and you look about five” Ethan said smirking slightly, Rowans smile faded quickly “I’m taller and stronger than you, so I wouldn’t get on my bad side pretty boy!” Rowan snapped at him “oooohhh im scared, your what? One year older than me? You look about seventeen” Ethan said looking into Rowans eyes, he lifted his fist ready to fight the moron “ETHAN!! DON’T PLEASE” Gemma shouted to him, Ethan put his fist down “im not the leader by the way. He is” Ethan said pointing towards Ruben. He turned around and let Gemma hold his hand so that Rowan or anyone else in that group didn’t get any ideas “.You look like you need some more people, we have eight?” Rowan suggested “deal, but only if im still the leader” Ruben smirked slightly there was a long pause which was finally filled “fine” Eight kids and teen piled in behind him one of the kids looked about five years old “I’m Thomas” He said smiling widely, Ethan watched as Gemma walked over to him “hello Thomas im Gemma!” Gemma said smiling sweetly “alright everyone un pack and make yourself at home” Ruben said over the top of people shuffling around the room, Ethan walked over to his sleeping bag and sat down, Rowan was an Idiot! He must have been a bully at school, when school was still there “Hey” Ethan looked up and noticed a guy with blonde ruffled hair “uhh hi, is Rowan always like that?” Ethan asked him, the boy smiled then sat down next to Ethan “yeah pretty much, its good to find someone else who thinks he’s a nut. Names Jake by the way” Jake said looking into his eyes, Ethan noticed blood covering all of Jakes hand “I’m Ethan, Why are you covered in blood? Did you come from a fight?” He asked suspiciously. They sat in silence and finally Jake huffed and spoke “one of our people didn’t get the injection, so you know how well that turned out” Jake said avoiding Ethan’s eyes “What do you mean?” He asked “if you don’t get the injection you turn into one of them. Simple as that”.

Audrey was sitting in the open looking at her cuts, it probably wasn’t a good idea but she didn’t care anymore. She opened her phone and found three bars of reception, phones didn’t really help now so it was pointless having hers but she kept it anyway as a memory of her parents. She got up onto her sore legs, what was it like to die? Does everything just go black? She began walking down the streets to find her house where she could be at peace with her cats.

She heard a low growl and looked up to find a small dog baring its teeth “not a bloody anther one!” She snapped. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small pocketknife, and ran at it full charge and stabbed it in the back. She watched as the strange colour blood pooled around the dogs body, and began crying. She couldn’t stop herself, she was lost and didn’t know what to do she just wanted to end her life now and be left in the darkness. She needed something, a sign she looked up from the dog and the very first thing she noticed was Taronga zoo. She knew it was mad, that there were probably tons of animals lurking inside since after all that where they were kept. but she had to do something and that was the only thing should think of.

Audrey walked straight up the road where the sign had told her to go, she reached into her pocket to pull out her knife just in case. And looked ahead at the zoo, which was at the end of the street, she could here music playing from it as she got closer she recognised the Chemical Brothers, but she wasn’t sure which song it was. She looked up at the gates and walked in. Alarms immediately went off She ran forward not knowing what to do and then was lifted off the ground by something with a tight grip, she looked up and saw that she was in a trap. She was lured into a trap with the music and all! These animals must be really smart! But that didn’t matter now because soon animals would be eating away at her body and there was nothing she could do. She closed her eyes tightly with her last hope that it might be quick, but then she remembered the pocketknife. She began cutting away at the rope as fast as she could “OI! What are you doing!? That’s the best rope we have!” Audrey looked up at a girl standing there with a long spear in her hand, she looked at her long brown hair that went past the girls knees “What do you want!?” Audrey said angrily “Nothing, we were actually expecting a Mute but its all good now” The girl snarled “a mute?” Audrey asked “ooohh right you probably call them something else well those things with the fangs and all are what we call mutes” She said studying Audrey’s face “ But why?” there was a long pause as the girl walked up to her and began sniffing her “Because they cant talk, they are mutants and they are also mutts. So it’s a mix of all the words together” She said stepping back “I’m going to go get Adrian” The girl ran off before Audrey could stop her. She wasn’t sure how long she was hanging there for but it felt like ages, here ankles were starting to really hurt and all the blood was rushing to her head. A Boy around nineteen strolled around the corner he was muscley and had brown hair with blonde streaks, the same girl from before came out behind him and there was anther girl behind her with short blonde hair. Adrian, well that was apparently his name. walked up to her “hold out your hand” He said sternly, Audrey looked at him holding her hand back but gave in and held out her hand. Adrian held her hand tightly so she couldn’t pull back and pulled out a knife “What are you doing!?” Audrey yelled “just stay still and I wont mess up, trust me I will explain” He said this still looking at her “okay” she said nervously, Adrian sliced a small cut in the centre of her palm and looked at her blood intensively “Her bloods clean” as he said this Audrey immediately worked out why he did it, to check if she had strange coloured blood to make sure she wasn’t a mute. Adrian pulled out a bandage and wrapped it around her hand tightly “there all better, Tilly could you help me untie her?” He asked the girl with the blonde hair who stepped up and began untying the rope around her legs. Audrey dropped to the ground and felt a shot of pain running up her back. “sorry about that” Tilly smiled weakly “here” Adrian held out his hand and helped her up. “welcome to the zoo” The girl with the long brown hair smiled evilly.
