Twelve months had gone fast considering that the first few weeks away from Maggie were like years themselves. Ned had found a new interest in Rose the second girl from the bus that fate had dealt him. She had no vices she didn’t smoke, and didn’t drink all she cared about was focusing on her art, and she was quite the artist. Graphic design was her thing, and along with Ned together the two were inseparable.
He became less negative, and self-loathing. Maybe I had to meet Maggie to find Rose, he thought to himself as he watched her draw. He loved that she played no mind games, and always said what she thought. Rose was always open to discussion even if they had different tastes in movies, and music they would always find away to enjoy their time together.
Often Ned did have small thoughts of Maggie he wondered where she was, what she was doing, how was her health. It’s only natural…she was my first love.
Even if Maggie didn’t know it Ned knew for the first time in his life he had experience real love. They were right for each other, whatever flaws she began to present in the final chapters of their story in his eyes she was perfect. It’s a lost love but it was there, and he’s not sure if he will ever feel the same about a person, but Rose was definitely growing on him the same way…only healthier.
He had even landed himself a nice government job working in an office, and it was far better then the hot days he spent before pushing trolleys. The benefits of such a job were amazing, government super, steady income, and freedom. Ned wore a cheeky grin, as he continued to marvel at Rose drawing up designs on Photoshop on her own Macintosh laptop she had saved up for, and bought herself.
Even her odd dress sense excited him; her big reading glasses, flower dress, and boots. She painted her fingernails blue, and was constantly changing her hairstyle, and colour. Each day was exciting, and Ned had come to nearly be satisfied there was always a slight hunger there but he wasn’t sure what it was.
So he just went with the present he stood up, and made his way over to Rose who was sitting upright in full concentration. He kissed her on the side of the cheek, and was not met with annoyance or resistance but a change of focus.
She looked up at him, and happily stood up, smiled, and returned the kiss only more passionately. They stumbled back toward the bedroom locked onto each other neither wanting to let go, and finally collapsed onto the bed.
Ned resurfaced at three o’clock in the morning he rubbed his eyes, and climbed out of bed. On the floor was Rose’s dress, and boots atop of his slacks, and work shirt.
Something was drawing him to the computer, and in a moment of curiosity he turned it on logging into Messenger. The place he, and the late Maggie spent countless hours sharing songs and exchanging banter.
Zero contacts online…well back to sleep.
Before he could log off a sound echoed through the speakers someone had come online. He quickly muted all sound and stared in disbelief, as the one, and only contact appeared online…it was Maggie.
Moments passed, and he finally decided to click on her name. He thought for several minutes on what to say, and decided a simple hello would suffice. He typed the words onto the screen. Hello.
Just as he clicked send a message appeared right before his eyes.
The user you are trying to contact is offline.
She had signed off leaving him alone reading his hello that was never sent.
What if she thinks I’ve been coming online every night looking for her… after all this time? Great.
