A survey of these means:
so dulled the nettle leans;
no flowers can thrive today;
no bindweed trumpets bray;no berry retains red;
all apples now are shed;
the grasses after frost,
disheveled, dazed and lost.Brambles overwintering
shake sieved cloud-light, glintering
from leaves aloft their trails
like canister-blasted sails.*In this sullen, wearying damp,
a rhymer flares his inner lamp.....................
*Refers to Napoleonic era sea-warfare where canister (filled with small stuff) was fired from cannons as anti personnel weapons at close range to sweep decks clear of men.
