Drake hadn't spoken a word since they had left Miersville. He sat in the passenger seat of Mia's car and looked out the window. He didn't care where they were going and had completely lost track of the time that had passed since they had been on the road. All the things that were swirling around in his head. The bubbling pot that was the tension between Melanie and Mia that would eventually boil over. His mother and the fact that she was a witch and tried to have him held captive as well had have Melanie, and Tessa killed. The world that he thought he knew was turned up-side down. He now had to go into hiding, hiding from his mother, Mia's coven, and whoever it was that wanted Melanie dead. He felt angry, and helpless for the first time since he found out he was more than human... he didn't know what to do.

"How's the hand?" Mia's voice shocked Drake back into reality.

"Fine." He said rolling his fingers on his right bandaged hand.

"Do you heal faster?" Mia asked not taking her eyes off the road.

"Only when it's on." Drake said not looking at her.

"Drake, talk to me what's going on?" She asked struggling to get her clearly enraged boyfriend to open up to her. Drake's chest swelled and then deflated.

"Mia, my girlfriend is a witch that was sent to spy on me, and who now because of me can't go home and see her family or go back to being who she was. My mother, also a witch, who has been keeping secrets from me my whole life, wants to see me put in a cage and have my friends killed. One of my best friends is a vampire, the very thing I am supposed to kill and she is now on the run from not only one of the oldest vampires alive but also your coven who according to you is the largest and most powerful group of witches in this hemisphere. Then my father and my best friend in the world is none the wiser to any of this and as far as their concerned I've been kid napped or dead in a ditch somewhere." Drake stopped, clinched his fist tight squeezed tightly. Mia looked over from the road and saw a single tear roll down his cheek. "I don't know what to do. I don't know if I will be strong enough to protect you all." He leaned forward with his hands clasped together and his forehead resting on his thumbs. His eyes were squeezed shut and his teeth was bared at the pain he was feeling inside.

Mia above anything else wanted to reach over and hold him she instead rested a hand on his broad back and gently rubbed him. This went on for just a few minutes then he sat up. He sighed and wiped the one tear mark off of his cheek.

"I'm sorry." He said barely above a whisper.

"For what?" Mia asked.

"For seeing me like this... I don't like you seeing me like this."

"Drake shut up." She snapped. "I'm going to lay a couple things out for you. One, you asked me to be your girlfriend, and I said yes so, it's my job to catch your back when things get tough. Two, the weight of the whole world is not yours to bear. I'm here so stop trying to take it all on your own. If I'm willing to walk out on everything for you, don't you think I'm willing to do anything to help you? Last but not least, me, and the vampires, were big girls we can take care of ourselves. I know you are a noble as a knight in golden armor but it's not solely your responsibility to protect us."

There was a long pause,

"You're too good for me." Drake said, and for the first time since they were in his bedroom he smiled.

"I know, but seeing as Gary Clark Jr is still taken, you're as good as it gets." Mia said returning the smile.

"Who?!" Drake snapped.
