How to start a story?

Well this is easy.

Don't start your story with the name of your character, their age, what they look like and their full background.

Example:

My name is Bod. I'm eighteen with brown have and blue eyes. My mom die last week and dad ran off with some girl, ect...

And another one, just try not to start with dialogue. Some people can get away with this. But it doesn't always work out.

What you want to start with is a question, details on setting, or what's going on around the character/characters to start it off.

Example from my book Snow Must Fall

What is the difference between fate and destiny? In short, destiny you change but with fate you have no control. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be the best witch doctor of all time, like my mother. My mother was a strong and willful person who had raised two children on her own... mostly. When I was ten, my brother was already a man, who should of started a family already. With our ten year gap my brother was more like a father to me.

Telling me what to do and how to take care of myself. Stay close to home and don't stay out after dark. Don't go to the village without him or mom. Don't talk to stranger and never ever help them no matter how hurt they may be.

To tell the truth I wish I listened.

This is the kind of things people what to see. It makes them what to read more. If you just say it all in one page you may loose your reader after they read a couple more chapters.
