Most plots involve a conflict. Conflict is introduced at the beginning of a story, and takes the form of obstacles or challenges the main characters need to overcome. Conflicts can be internal, such as between a character and himself, between a character and his environment, or between two or more characters.
A story generally includes one main conflict, though it may include smaller conflicts among minor characters. Conflict creates tension in a story, which gives the story momentum and makes the reader want to read further.
Rising Action Creates Tension
Once the conflict is established, the rising action of a story is the series of related events that build up to the climax. In a murder mystery, the rising action may be the clues a detective discovers before finally figuring out who the murder was. During the rising action, the tension and suspense in a story continues to grow. This propels the story forward and sets up the most important part of the story: the climax.
The Crisis Point
The climax is the crisis point in the story, when the action and suspense is at its most intense. In many stories, the climax is also a turning point for the main characters or a moment when something significant changes. In a murder mystery, the climax may be the moment that a detective realizes who the killer is. The decisions the characters make and the situation they face during the climax often determine how their story will end. For example, if the detective confronts the killer, the decisions he makes during the confrontation will decide if he wins or if the killer gets away.
Resolving the Story
After the climax, the conflict faced by the main character begins to unravel. This stage is known as the falling action, which eventually reaches the story's resolution. During the resolution, conflicts are resolved, mysteries are solved, and the tension of the story dissolves. The resolution is an important part of the story because it shows the reader how the main characters deal with the aftermath of the intense events in the climax as well as how the story ends.
