"Where is Piper, anyways?" Annabeth asked.
Jason clenched his teeth together in an attempt not to lash out irrationally at anything that was close to him. Leo put a hand on his shoulder, obviously seeing how unsettled he was.
"Luke." Leo said, looking back to Annabeth. "He got her during the fight. I think he was talking about some kind of promise or something, and that's why she had to go. Like she didn't have a choice."
Jason inhaled swiftly. He hadn't even thought about why Luke would have wanted Piper. He was too busy worrying about what would happen to her to think about the why part.
"A promise?" Annabeth said, looking pale. "Why would she promise anything to Luke?"
Leo rolled his eyes. "The only reason she does anything."
Jason felt as if a sledgehammer had wedged itself into his brain, right before he could grab the entire answer. But he connected some of it. "Me." He clenched his fists. "So this is all my fault. And all my idiotic brain could pick up from all of our briefest conversations--she was telling me goodbye." He ran a hand through his hair. "Those blackouts she had. All the yelling about Thanatos--" He stopped dead in his tracks.
Leo waved a hand in front of his face. "Hey, you look like you got something. Care to share it?"
"Thanatos." Jason said, suddenly grasping exactly what had happened. "Piper didn't make a deal with Luke--she made one with Thanatos."
Annabeth looked confused. "Then why did Luke--"
"He has his ring." Jason said with a high amount of energy. "Somehow, Luke got a hold of Thanatos's ring. And apparently, that's where he keeps all his power. Whatever she promised to that god, it's now Luke's to deal with."
"Who keeps all their power in a ring?" Annabeth mumbled.
Leo's eyes widened. "Piper wanted Thanatos to keep you alive. And to kill Tartarus. That's how she did it! No wonder she never told us."
Jason squared his shoulders. "This is my fault, so I'm going to fix it."
Annabeth frowned. "Jason, it's not your fault. Piper made her own decisions." She held up her hands when Jason gave her a glare. "I'm not saying we're not going to go get her back, which we are. I was just saying you don't have to feel guilty about something that's not your fault."
Jason sighed. "I can't help it. Let's just go get her back." They headed their separate ways, Jason stepping into his cabin. He yanked on a light jacket, stuffing a handful of ambrosia into his pocket before leaving for the stables.
"Hey, Grace!" A voice yelled.
Jason turned, and was greeted by a handful of campers, all ready and dressed in full battle armor. "If it's Piper you're going after, we're coming with." The guy held his hand out. "Mitchell, Son of Aphrodite. These are all my siblings. We might not be great fighters, but we can still help."
Jason was taken aback. Aphrodite's kids wanted to fight? That was a first. Well, if you didn't count fighting over make-up and Prada constantly.
"Lightning boy! Ares is in, too!" Clarisse ran up with the rest of the Ares cabin, yielding a crackling electric spear. "Luke's really gonna get it this time."
