"How well did you know my mother?" I ask Madge as we move toward the Capitol.

"Very well. She used to sell me strawberries. We were very good friends." She says. "I knew your father okay too."

"Do you know where my mother really got that scar from? The one on her back, I mean." I ask nervously.

"She always told me it was a hunting injury. There are some big animals in those woods." She says.

"It just looks more like a knife wound.to me. It's a pretty big gash."

"Look, Aaliyah. I don't know how she got it, but Katniss doesn't lie to people. If she says its from hunting, I believe her." She excuses herself to her room and leaves the car after that.

KATNISS

Looking in the mirror I trace the scar. Peeta knows where it's from. So do Madge, Gale, and Prim.

Aaliyah thinks she knows.

I would never tell her though.

I guess it's my own fault for getting involved.

I don't want any part of it.

We never did anything to deserve this.

The games shouldn't exist even.

But i'm not going to do anything about it anytime soon.

I know my own daughter.

I know she can win.

Peeta comes up from behind me and wraps his arms around my shoulders, looking at the scar as well.

"You know I'm sorry right?" he says softly. "For all of it."

"This is bigger than us, Peeta." I mutter. "Much bigger."

AALIYAH

"Is there anything you know you're good at?" Effie says, eyeing Haymitch curiously as he sloshes around the vodka in his long necked bottle.

"I'm strong." Zion is quick to say.

They all look to me next and I don't know what to say. I've been hunting before, but the training center is surely bugged, so mentioning it is futile.

"I know her." Madge pipes in. "She has survival instinct in her blood."

"I wonder which parent that came from..." Haymitch raises his eyebrows to emphasize the sarcasm.

"Okay, so training in the morning. Do you know your approaches yet?" Effie asks,

"You know, allies, strategies, Do you want to show off, save your skills, pack with a group in the arena?"

"I don't really have many skills. Maybe I could play it off as hiding my skills until the arena."
