Poison Kiss
Chapter 9:
Ashlynn's POV:
After a week of healing, the doctor finally decided that I was well enough to go back to the hellhole most people refer to as school. Needless to say, I wasn't to thrilled with his decision. As I walked up the steps to the legal form of torture, I made a mental note to change doctors.
Some of the other students looked upon me with curiosity at the sight of my fading cuts and bruises. I glared back at them menacingly and they shrank away in fear. I almost smiled. Almost.
"Hey girl!" shrieked Hayley, running up behind me and wrapping her arms around my neck. "Where have you been? Damn, I thought you where dead!"
As she released me, I turned to face her. She gasped in horror at my minor injuries. "Ohmygod Ash!!!" she screeched, running her words together. "What happened?!"
I dropped my gaze down to the pavement. "It's nothing." I muttered sullenly.
"Fine." she said, taking the hint. "Let's get to class before the bell rings." She took my arm in her hand and guided me the rest of the way up the steps and into the building.
My first class was hell, and the next three weren't much better. By lunch time I was more than ready to leave. Unfortunately, I still had two classes to go.
As I walked down the crowded hallway, I saw Brian leaning up against the lockers flirting with one of the cheerleaders. I tried to hide myself in the crowd, but wasn't fast enough. He glanced over and blew me a kiss while winking before turning back to the girl, who hadn't noticed anything. I shuddered and darted down the hall as fast as I could.
I opened the first door I came to and dashed inside. It conveniently happened to be the girl's bathroom. I glanced in the mirror and was shocked by how horrid my face looked. Maybe I should look into buying some coverup. At least for the worst of the bruises.
I heard the bathroom door open as Stacy and her clique prepared to enter the restroom. I hurriedly hid myself in a stall before they could see me. By looking through the crack in the door, I could see that they were applying more makeup and fixing their hair.
"I heard he's such a player." Nicole said.
"Yeah. I bet he'd sleep with anything that has two legs and looks somewhat feminine." gossiped another girl.
"But he's hot." reasoned Sophie.
"True." the other girls agreed.
"And he's all mine." Stacy added.
Sophie got a funny look on her face. "Since when?" she asked.
"Since he asked me out yesterday." Stacy answered casually. "After all, it was meant to be. Everyone knows that I'm the top female. I always get what I want."
I shuddered in disgust. I amost felt sorry for whatever ignorant male had made the mistake of asking out the school slut.
Sophie glared at Stacy. "Oh really?" she said raising her eyebrows. "Well then why was he with me last night?"
Stacy's eyes darkened and I flinched. "You are a lying bitch!" she said in a dangerously quiet voice.
Sophie shrank back against the wall as Stacy glared down at her. "Brian will never like you! After all," she smirked. "He's in love with me."
I gasped. What? Since when had he liked Stacy?
Stacy's head shot up and she turned in my direction. "Well, well, well." she murmured. "What do we have here." She reached out and flung open the door I had forgotten to lock. Her eyes momentarily widened in surprise before returning to her natural smug expression. "Oh look." she said, forgetting her anger at Sophie. "Little naive Ashlynn. Brian's OLD plaything."
I shuddered as her hot minty breath burned my eyes. "I-I..." I stuttered, trying to think of an excuse for eavesdropping. "I had to pee...."
She threw her head back and cackled as the other girls looked on in amusement. "You really think I'm going to believe that?" she screeched. "Regardless of my social status, I am not stupid." She looked down at me with mock sympathy in her eyes. "Poor Ashlynn. She has nobody to love. She left her boyfriend because he cheated a little. Don't be so naive! It's the 21st century, who doesn't cheat? You just couldn't see what you had, could you? And now you're sad because you're all alone." she stepped back. "Look who can't even put two and two together!"
I felt tears pricking the back of my eyes, but I refused to cry, at least not right now. I knew that she was just being herself. Somehow I knew that I would always be more human than her.
"Come on girls." Stacy called to her flock of 'friends' as she walked out the door. "We wouldn't want to be late for class."
All the girls filed out the door robotically, as if Stacy had an imaginary leash on them. It was completely ridiculous how much power she had over them. I could only hope that someday they would realize their stupidity.
I stood from my crouching position and stretched, absentmindedly checking my watch. "Crap!" I exclaimed to no one but myself. "I'm going to be late for class. I scrambled out the door and headed for my fifth period class just as the tardy bell rang.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I arrived home a little earlier than usual in order to spend some time with my mother. Things had been really rough on her lately and I felt like I needed to be there for her.
"I'm home!" I yelled as I slipped off my shoes and stepped into the entrance hallway. Nothing but silence answered me. Sadie was with Simon so I hadn't expected her to be here, but where could my mother be.
I casually made my way into the kitchen and grabbed an apple out if the basket. That's when I noticed the note:
Dear Ashlynn and Sadie,
I've gone out for a bit with a lovely gentleman that I met a while ago. I left a casserole in the fridge. Heat it for two and a half minutes. Don't wait up.
-Mom
Mom had a date? I thought she said that she'd never love again after dad. Oh well, it's probably just a friend date.
I was about to head up to my room when I heard a knock on the door. I quietly made my way to the door and peeked out cautiously. Nico? What was he doing here?!

Hey. Thanks for reading. If you don't remember, Nico is the boy who found Ashlynn when she was injured. I'll try to update soon since it's summer and I'm not very busy. I also have Internet again (finally!). Sorry for not updating like I should have been. Hope you liked it!
