Poison Kiss:

Chapter 19:

Ashlynn's POV:

I lay awake almost the entire night thinking about the kiss, the date, and most of all, Vincent. It wasn't a good idea stay up for an entire night, especially not on a school night, but I couldn't help it. Thoughts of him just kept on drifting through my mind, almost as if taunting me.

The date had ended awkwardly with neither of us speaking a word to one another after the breathtaking kiss. He had just dropped me off at my house and driven away. Was he angry with me? How could he be, he was the one who kissed me. Sometimes other humans could be so difficult to understand. Other times, I wondered if I was human at all.

The sun rose slowly at about six thirty in the morning, barely peeking over the distant treetops of the Pinewood Forest. My mind still swirled with confusion and wonder. I knew that it would only be a matter of time until the exhaustion set in. Somewhere in the distance dogs were howling in the early morning light, most likely the only thing other than my thoughts to keep me conscious at the early hour.

After much tossing and turning, I finally got out of bed, seeing that my battle with my own emotions was futile. I walked over to my bedroom window and gazed out. An early morning breeze rustled through the branches of the oak tree that sat directly in between Sadie's bedroom and my own. After a minute of staring, I found my gaze wandering in the direction of Vincent's house. Of course the distance was too far for human eyes to see, but it didn't stop me from trying. I balanced precariously on my tiptoes and tried to catch a glimpse of the outside world beyond the endless rows of houses which seemed to stretch on into eternity.

My world-stalking, however, was cut short when my foot slipped out from under me and I crashed heavily to the ground. I forced myself to remain silent as I impacted the rough flooring, hoping that Sadie had not been awoken by my clumsiness.

Suddenly, out of the peaceful morning silence, a hushed masculine voice carried from the backyard and into my room. I hurriedly scrambled to my feet and glanced out the window, attempting to keep the glass from fogging up under my curious breath. Someone or something darted beneath my window. I leaned outward for a better look, and gasped at the scene that had been illuminated in the moonlight. Sadie and Simon....were kissing!

I knew it! I thought, my mind hazy with triumph and shock. But why had they kept it a secret, and what were they doing at six in the morning in our backyard?

I tried to move even closer to the window, but my head thunked loudly against the glass, causing them to glance up quickly. I threw myself backward, landing in a heap on the ground. I prayed that they hadn't seen me. I would feel awful if they knew how much I had intruded on their private moment.

I lay huddled on the floor, for a few moments before getting up and sneaking over to the window. I glanced carefully and saw that they had already vanished. In Sadie's room next door, I heard the window slide open slowly, before something large impacted the floor.

I immediately dived into my bed and pulled the covers over my head. It would be death if she knew that I had seen her. I squeezed my eyes shut tightly as the sound of ominous creaking footsteps grew nearer. At last, the stopped outside of my door, and the dreaded knocking noise began.

Knock, knock, knock.

"Ashlynn, are you in there?" Sadie's voice rang loud and clear through my room. "Ashlynn, please let me in."

Knock, knock, knock.

I knew that she could keep this up until the end of time, so I forced myself slowly out of bed and made my way to the door, trying to appear as tired possible. I slowly pushed the door open, yawning and rubbing my eyes in the process. "Yes, Sadie?" I mumbled as if I had just been rudely awoken.
