Poison Kiss
Chapter 11:
Vincent's POV:
I waited quietly in my car outside of Ashlynn's house (which she had texted me directions to) wondering when she would be down. I had called her a few minutes ago to notify her that I was there. She told me that she had to sneak out and to give her a little time to figure it out.
I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel impatiently. It sucked to not have friends around. Hopefully Ashlynn would want to spend time with me in the future, regardless of my cousin's actions.
I heard a tapping on the passenger side window, and looked up to see Ashlynn standing outside. I reached over and unlocked and opened the door for her. She quickly jumped inside, shivering slightly, a couple leaves and bits of moss clinging to her shirt and hair.
"Sorry I kept you waiting." she said shyly as I started to drive. "I had to climb out the window and down a tree."
I chuckled. "It's fine. Don't worry about it." I glanced at the digital car clock and saw that it was eleven o' clock p.m.. "I'll have you home by three at the latest."
Ashlynn nodded slightly and leaned against the door, watching all the houses blur by. "I just feel bad about sneaking out." she murmured, her light pink lips pulled into a thin line. "My mom is going through a lot right now and she'd flip out if she woke up and I was gone."
I nodded, slowing the car a bit. "We can go back if you want." I said, not really wanting to let her go.
She shook her head. "I love my mom, but I can see that you need someone, too." she said thoughtfully. I remained silent and she took my silence as an invitation to continue. "I may not know your story, but I can tell when someone's hurting inside. I hope that after tonight we'll both have someone to talk to."
I nodded. It felt good that she trusted me, even though she had seen what my cousin could do. I slowed the car again, this time due to the fact that I was almost home. I pulled into the driveway and killed the engine, jumping out and running up the walkway to unlock the door.
It was really dark, and I was thankful that I had remembered to leave my porch light on. I unlocked the door walked inside. Ashlynn trailed behind me, and I could tell that she was nervous. I flashed her a reassuring smile before stepping into the darkened living room and flicking on the lights.
I was thankful that my mother had been willing to take Raven for the night. I was exhausted and needed a break from her, however terrible that sounds.
For some reason I wasn't really ready to tell Ashlynn about Raven. In a way, I guess I didn't want to scare her away or cause her to think less of me. I had even made sure to lock the door to the nursery before leaving to pick up Ashlynn.
"Nice place." Ashlynn murmured, standing awkwardly in the middle of the living room floor.
"You can sit down, you know." I said, gesturing to the couch before sitting down myself. A moment later, Ashlynn nervously plopped down next to me. After a brief silence, she looked over at me. "Now what?" I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know. What do you usually do for fun?" "Hmm..." she mumbled thoughtfully. "I guess that I watch movies or play video games."
I frowned. "Umm.. Sorry. I guess I don't really ever do any of those things anymore." I mumbled. "I watch the news... How does that sound?"
She let out a nervous giggle, which quickly turned into heavy laughter that almost had her in tears. She looked so funny that before long I was laughing too. My stomach began to ache with laughter and I clutched at it, trying to get a breath. Ashlynn noticed me struggling and started laughing even harder.
