Chapter Thirty-Four: Broken Promises

"Time for bed, Emmy!" I picked her up, kissing her nose.

"Mommy?" she tilted her head to the side.

"Yes, love?"

"Why you head hurt?" she touched my hair gently and I leaned my head into her hand.

"It's," I sighed. "Well, it's complicated sweetheart. I'll tell you later, okay?"

"But why?"

Toby came in and took Emilee out of my arms. "Hey, let's go to bed, okay? We can ask mommybuscus questions tomorrow."

"Alright daddy," she stuck her thumb in her mouth as Toby carried her to the bedroom.

I turned out the lights in the house before heading to the bedroom. Toby had changed Emilee into a nightgown and was laying down with her pressed against his chest. We were thinking about changing the study into a bedroom and moving everything to his gaming room, but we couldn't stand to have her sleep in a different room just yet. Toby smiled and waved me over to the bed. "I'm just going to change," I went to the closet.

//Toby's POV//

Violet changed into sweats and one of my Tobuscus shorts before climbing into the bed across from me. "Are you going to tell her?" I asked, and she stared sadly at our daughter.

"Someday," she nodded. "When she's old enough to understand."

"I love you. You know that right?"

"Of course dumdum," she laughed quietly.

"Good." I placed my hand that wasn't holding Emmy on Vi's arm before drifting off to sleep.

I jolted out of bed, gasping. I think I was having a nightmare, but I couldn't remember any of it. "Vi?" I needed her comfort right now. I reached over to feel her warmth, but was met with cool, empty sheets. "Emmy?" She was gone, too... I stood from the bed, confused, and went to the living room. "Violet?" I called. "Where are you?" My heart sped up when there was no reply. "VIOLET? VIOLET?!" I sprinted up and down the hallways and searched every room, but to no avail. They weren't in the house. That's when I saw the note on the coffee table. I snatched it up, analyzing it.

"Dear Toby," I read out loud. "I've done you a favor. You're welcome. Love Always, Annie." The note fluttered out of my hand, dropping to the ground as I struggled for air. That maniac had my family...? I looked back down and saw an address on the back of the note. Without a second thought, I was out the door.
