Chapter Thirty-Six: Are You Okay?

"Toby?" I heard a distant voice calling for me, clouding the evil cackling of the maniac on the ground next to me."Toby, are you okay, sweetheart? Wake up!"

My eyes snapped open and I shot out of the bed, hyperventilating. "No, no, no," I breathed, becoming aware of my surroundings. I saw Violet kneeling on the bed where I had been a few seconds ago, staring at me worriedly, and Emilee sitting in her lap. "Oh my God," I whispered before jumping onto the bed, holding both of them against me. "Are you real?" I pulled back, locking eyes with Violet.

"Yes," she nodded, still looking very confused. "What happened, baby? You were screaming and thrashing around in your sleep..."

"I'm just so glad you're okay," I pulled her back to my chest, and felt Emmy grab my shirt. "And you, Emmybuscus!" I laughed, kissing her nose. "I had the worst nightmare," I placed a hand on Vi's cheek, still in awe of her being here, with me, alive...

"I can imagine," she chuckled. "Why don't you tell me about it?"

I looked down to Emmy, before returning my gaze to Violet. "Let's talk in the other room." I didn't want Emilee to hear any of that.

//Violet's POV//

Toby explained everything to me, and I almost started crying just at the thought of having such a horrific nightmare. "I'm so sorry, honey," I squeezed his hands in mine. "It's okay, Em and I are both perfectly fine. Don't you worry about us, okay?" I smiled reassuringly.

"But what if it had been real?" he sighed, shaking his head. "I wasn't able to protect you two."

"Honey, it was just a nightmare. If it were real I'm sure you would have-"

"But what if I can't?!" he shouted, cutting me off and I blinked in surprise. "I'm sorry," he apologized quietly.

"Daddy?" We both turned to see Emilee standing in the doorway with her hands pressed against her mouth and her eyebrows were furrowed. "Why are you yelling at mommy?"

"Come here baby," Toby picked her up, cradling her to his chest and running his hands through her hair. "I didn't mean to tell. Daddybuscus is just a little scared right now."

"Daddy isn't scared," she giggled, pulling back to flash a dimpled smile. "Daddy is never scared. He's a brave Buscus. Right mommy?"

"Of course," I patted her back and met Toby's eyes. "Daddy is a very, very brave Buscus."

For the next few months, Toby would wake up in the middle of the night to make sure Emilee and I were still there. I knew exactly how he felt, because I'd been having nightmares my entire life. Mine came less often, as I spent most o my time worrying about Toby's sanity rather than my own.

When Emilee turned three and six months, I told Toby that we had to move her to her own bedroom or she would never want to leave us. "But what if-" he started to panic, and I soothed him by playing with his curls and leaning my head against his chest.

"It's okay, baby. Nothing will ever happen to us, remember? She'll be fine."

He agreed, and we spent the next month moving her things to what used to be a study. "I don't want to leave, mom," she sighed.

"Aren't you a big girl, Em?"

"Yes," she stomped her foot. "I am a big girl. I'm tough!"

"Big girls have their own rooms."

"You sleep with daddy! Are you a baby, mommy?" she giggled.

"Oh yes," Toby wrapped an arm around my waist. "Mommy is a big baby!"

That night, Toby and I watched Emilee fall asleep in her new room before returning to our own and drifting off to a night of peaceful sleep.
