Chapter 3

We were all eating seal stew at the diner tent, Ozai and Pa at the top, Ursa and my Mama opposite each other and next to their husbands, Zuko next to his mother and Sokka next to him. Azula was opposite Zuko and I was next to her.

At the bottom.

I sit silently questioning the fact of why the males get to sit at the top of the table and the women nearer the bottom.

Although, Mama and Ursa were next to them if they were like me they would only be a few seats upwards.

I wonder what it's like to be a man,

To have both physical and mental power over others.

To be respected and valued as a strong leader and to do the thing I wanted to do most out of anything else,

To Work.

I just wanted to work.

Working was like bending,

Women, who were only used for producing children and cleaning up the mess the man left, were not supposed to take part in 'those ghastly actions' because it wasn't 'etiquette' or 'lady like.'

Or according to Mama.

Azula however, was a highly respected princess and she had proven herself worthy of a simple but difficult task of going on a boat.

That mighty and respectable thing for a woman in the Fire Nation.

It was nion impossible to get that far up for a woman, it takes years of hard training and breaking to be able to leave the country to go to train men and boys and ship cargo to other lands.

That, was respectable in the Fire Nation.

Pretty cool.

Whereas I, still had to prove that I was able to cope with fishing because apparently putting wire in a pool, waiting for fish and pulling it out at a suitable time was very, very difficult for a woman's small, stubborn mind to cope.

I still had to ask the elders permission to go onto the ice caps to fetch my brother from ice chipping and even then I was not given permission to step into the ice!

But, in the time that I had, I trained. I went into an ice cave and bent like I had never before.

And I may of taken a few kids with me to teach.

But that was only after begging and negotiating with the elders for 20 moons!

The Fire Nation was so far ahead in sexism, they were trying, men almost treating women as equals.
