I rushed through the doors of the large classroom. In an instant, my eyes landed on my friend Bryan. "Hey." I mumbled as I sat down, attempting to shield myself from Lydia, even though she hadn't walked through the door yet.
"Hey. What's up?" He asked while watching on as I made a fool of myself. I arranged my books so they were stacked on top one another, shielding me as best as they could.
"Nothing. She um...she talked to me." I said while waiting for her to walk through the door. Bryan looked confused, and he followed my gaze.
"Who? Lydia?" He asked. His voice was filled with amusement, and after a few moments he let out an actual laugh. I narrowed my eyes at him out of confusion.
"What's so funny?" I asked. The table next to me suddenly became occupied, and I looked over to see who had sat down.
"Hey Lydia." Bryan said. He turned his gaze towards me and cocked an eyebrow. 'Shut up.' I mouthed in response.
"Hey...so um what's going on?" She asked while playing with the charms that laced her silver bracelet.
In an attempt to start a decent conversation, I pointed to it. "What is that?" She looked from her wrist, and then to me.
"It's a charm bracelet." She smiled. "Do you like it?" I nodded my head. Bryan watched on awkwardly as Lydia and I stared at each other. The longer I stared at her, the weirder I felt. A warm fuzzy feeling settled in my chest, and it only seemed to grow.
I could hear Bryan groan, and from the corner of my eye I watched him slam his hands onto his desk. Lydia and I both tore our gazes from one another at the sound.
"Just date already." Was all he said before he stood up and walked to a different set of desks. Lydia scoffed at his suggestion, and turned back to face me.
"What's his problem?" She asked as she jabbed her thumb over her shoulder. I shrugged in response, and rolled my eyes at him.
"I don't know. He always makes a big deal about my crushes." I said before I could even process my own words. I glanced up at her with wide eyes, and I could see that she was biting back a smile.
Trying to act oblivious, she said, "you uh-you have a crush on me?" I let out a nervous laugh, and attempted to dismiss her words by waving my hands around.
"What? No I- aren't you like...a year older than me?" I stumbled over my own words like a drunk stumbled over his own feet. I felt the back of my neck get hot and I attempted to shield the blush forming on my cheeks.
She smiled, causing dimples to form on the lower part of her cheeks. "Well...I am fourteen." She mumbled while brushing back her hair. "How old are you?" She asked.
So I was right. She was a year older than me. The thought of that made my heart sink, it made me feel as if I would never have a chance with her. What if she didn't date guys slightly younger than her? What if she didn't date guys at all?
Wait. She called me cute, of course she dates guys.
I thought to myself. "I'm thirteen. But I'm about to be fourteen." I quickly added, hoping it would do something for a possible relationship. She nodded as if she already knew, and then asked;
"So...when's your birthday?"
"January seventh." She looked up at me, and her shoulders seemed to have tensed. I instantly felt bad even though I had no idea if she was tense because of me, or because of something else. Despite this, I decided to ask her the same question. "Well, when's your birthday?"
It seemed as if she tried to shake away whatever was bothering her, and masked it with a, noticeably, fake smile. "January first." I felt the same thing as I did earlier. My heart dropped. But this time, it hit the floor.
I know I was making a big deal out of nothing, but to me this was something. She was a whole year older than me. That could jeopardize any affection she might have felt, or would've felt towards me.
I ran a hand through my hair, I wasn't going to throw away these feelings just because of a tiny age gap. "Hey...I know we just started talking today but..." I drifted off as I slid my phone out of my pocket. "Can I have your number?"
She smiled and reached her hand out, grabbing my phone. She slid hers across the table too, and I grabbed it. I entered my number in, and saved my contact name as 'Weston is awesome👑' She looked over my shoulder, and laughed as she saw the name I had used.
After a minute or two, we gave each other back our phones, and I clicked her contact. 'But Lydia's cooler💁🏻' I laughed and said, "friendship goals!" She laughed too, and nodded her head.
"Weston!" I heard my teacher yell. I turned my head to the front of the class, to see her writing down on a piece of paper. "Your leaving bud." She said. She walked up to me with the slip in her hands, and set it on the corner of my desk.
For once in my life, I didn't want to leave school. I was finally getting my crush of six years to talk to me, and now I was getting called out early. "I'll text you." I heard her say. I smiled at her while getting my stuff together, and waved her 'bye'.
As I walked to my locker, I pulled out my phone, preparing to send her a text. I wanted it to be subtle, but I also wanted to be able to start a conversation.
By the time my locker came into view, I settled on;
'nobody is cooler than me. But I guess I can make an exception with you😂'
"Oh my god. Did I actually...send that?"
