The foundry came into view as we rounded a corner, I stopped as Bryan and Lydia went ahead. They stopped in front of a girl with curly jet black hair, and tan skin. She was holding her books in the crook of her arm, staring down at her phone. Her head lifted up when Lydia walked up to her. By the way they talked, I was guessing she was Nikki.
I stood up straight, rubbing the center of my chest as if it would help my irregular breathing. The sound of panting came from behind me, and I turned around to see Maggie. She was leaning against the wall, hands rested against her knees.
"Hey." I mumbled, standing next to her. She gave me a slight head nod in response. I cleared my throat to fill the silence with some sort of sound, leaning my back against the stone wall of the school. "Are you ok?" I asked after she seemed to have calmed down.
Her head turned so she was facing me, and I felt weird under her stare. Something about her dark brown eyes staring at me, made me feel uncomfortable. I twitched under her stare, waiting for her response. "Yeah." She mumbled, her voice was airy as she said it, and I looked up at her.
"Do you...have asthma?" The words left my mouth slowly, unsure if she would be offended by my question.
She let out a quiet chuckle, shaking her head as she turned to lean on her shoulder. We were now sharing full on eye contact. "No." She laughed out.
I smiled at her, a weight lifting off my shoulders as she said that. "Do you?" She asked after a few short moments of silence.
"Who? Me?" I asked, gesturing to myself. Maggie rolled her eyes in disappointment, shaking her head.
"No, your imaginary friend beside you." Her voice was laced with sarcasm and sass, reminding me of Lydia. Her hand was pointing to an empty space beside me, and I laughed at her joke.
As if it were a real person, I turned to the void she had gestured to. "Bob, Maggie asked you a question." I said, my voice was commanding, as if I were talking to a young child. Her hand collided with my shoulder, and I rubbed the sore spot. A laugh escaping my lips.
"I'm being serious!" She yelled at me, the corners of her lips tugging into a smile.
I shook my head, pressing my lips into a thin line. "No, I don't have asthma." I mumbled. "I have something...way, way worse." Maggie's smile faded quickly as she turned to face me.
I turned my head dramatically to the side, trying to stifle my laugh. "I have...brain damage." My voice was distant as a smile crept onto my face. My eyes landed on Lydia, Bryan, and Nikki. She looked upset, and continuously cracked her knuckles.
Her appearance scared me. Her all black clothing made her look tough, but her size made her look even scarier. She was a whole head taller than Lydia, maybe even an inch or two taller than Bryan. She glanced up at me, and I quickly yanked my head away, turning to face Maggie.
Her eyes were narrowed into a glare, and her teeth were pulling on her bottom lip. "Weston!" She yelled, her fingers curling in to a fist and punching my arm.
"What?" I yelled back, clutching onto my arm. I observed my already bruised skin, finding two red marks on my shoulder from Maggie's previous hits. "Damn. I don't know what it is...but you short girls hit hard." I laughed. Maggie rolled her eyes slightly, pulling off the cloth that was draped over her head. She had very short red hair, shorter than mine. She ran a hand over her head, stuffing the cloth in her bag.
Once she stood up straight again, she sent me a crooked smile. "Let's go join the drama queens." I laughed, following Maggie in the direction of the small group of three. I stood off to the sidelines awkwardly as Maggie left me to engage in their conversation.
After a few minutes, I heard; "uh-whose that?" Nikki asked as she pointed to me. I looked at their faces as they awaited an introduction, and I stepped forward.
"H-hey." I waved awkwardly. "I'm Weston." She stared at me with narrowed eyes for a few more seconds. She gasped, her eyes widened as she looked between Lydia and I.
"Lydia! That's the guy-" Before she could finish her rambling, Lydia was quick to put her hand over Nikki's mouth, shutting her up instantly. The two girls stared at each other, Nikki cowering under Lydia's harsh glare.
I couldn't even question what Nikki was rambling on about before Bryan had sent me a knowing glance. I felt heat rise to my cheeks, and I hung my head low before anyone could notice.
"Hey guys!" Someone called from down the hallway. We all turned our heads to see Ian jogging down the hallway. He stopped a few feet away before he continued to walk. "Kyla's a no show." He mumbled, shaking his head. Nikki smiled to herself at this new information, shrugging her shoulders.
"I knew it." She said whilst biting her bottom lip. "She's threatened to fight me so many times." Nikki turned her back to the group, running her hand through her jet black hair. She almost seemed disappointed that Kyla didn't show up like she had said, but then again she did skip class for this.
Sighing, Nikki turned back around. "How much longer until second period starts?" She asked no one in particular, just waiting for an answer to escape someone's mouth.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket, pushing the home button, causing the screen to illuminate. "In about ten minutes." I mumbled as I read the time off my phone. Nikki nodded, sending me a small smile as a way to say thank you.
"Well...what do we do now?" Ian asked as he moved to stand by Maggie. His eyes traveled down to her smaller frame, staring at her through his eyelashes. I smirked to myself, knowing that his staring was intentional. He liked her.
"We wait for the bell to ring." Someone said, and a chorus of laughs escaped everyone's mouths. My eyes still stuck on Ian as I glared at him.
He sensed my staring, and lifted his head up, his eyes falling onto me. 'What?' He mouthed, his eyes narrowed in confusion.
I let my eyes drift between Maggie and him, a smirk playing on my lips. 'You and Maggie?' I mouthed back in response. His eyes squinted as he lifted up his hand, pointing to his ear. A signal that told me he didn't understand. I rolled my eyes before looking back to him. 'You and Maggie.' I repeated. My words were slowed down to make sure he could understand, and I made sure to point to each of them as I muttered their names.
It took him a second to get what I was hinting at, but once he understood his eyes widened in complete shock. 'No.' His hands waved around frantically as he attempted to dismiss my assumption. I kept the smirk on my lips as I nodded.
After all these years of him teasing me for liking Lydia, he would finally get a taste of his own medicine.
