MaryAnn

I laid my towel on the tan sand and sat on it. The fabric feeling soft and new under my legs and finger tips. The sun was blazing, making the clear blue ocean sparkle and look welcoming. There were lots of red eyes out here today, all bothered by the fact that they couldn’t swim far into the ocean.

Lively Beach was where a lot of the teens went. Vamps, shape shifters, wizards, witches, etc. always showed up here. Sometimes even humans showed up! Humans were called Norms and were called Creats-short for creatures. We all get along though as long as none of us eat them, hurt them, or kill them. I personally would never do any of those things. Even though about 200 hundred years ago my family and I used to hunt humans. But that was back in the day when no laws were made.

“Oh my gosh MaryAnn you’re actually out!” My best friend Valerie, who’s a shape shifter, came and sat down with me. “Wait, you just left didn’t you? You never learn do you?”

“They never let out so the only way to go out is through my window.” I ran my tongue against my fangs.

“Oh MaryAnn. Well I’m glad you’re here because I wanted to tell you Chad and I are back together yay! “Valerie had a huge smile on her face and I loved when she was happy.

Valerie and I met just a year ago at training camp. All teens are expected to go to camp just in case a war between anyone breaks out. I hate it. I mean I can fight just fine, I’m a vampire all vampires are strong. However, my powers aren’t as flashy as a witch. All I can do is heal and nothing else-I know exciting. Anyways, Valerie was up against me and she was so scared that I’d hurt her. So I let her win and she knew I did and ever since then we became great friends. It was that simple. Valerie was a rocker; she was not a girly girl dresser like me. She always dyed her hair and always wore heavy makeup and of course dark colors, maybe some neon once in a while. This year she went with black and red hair and it really worked for her. Valerie was beautiful, she dressed rough but she was super sweet and had the most amazing silver bluish eyes. We were completely different but we don’t care one bit.

“That’s great Val! Now there shouldn’t be any more breakin’ up now okay?”

“Gosh I hope not. Your accent is way thicker now MaryAnn. Too much time with your parents.” We both laughed. “Well I came to look for you to tell you the news since your phone was taken away. I knew you would be here.”

I laughed, “You know me too well Val.” We gave each other hugs and then she left. I got up and took a walk on the beach. Being the popular girl at school means everyone knows me so I get a lot of hellos. I’m not bragging I’m just saying because it’s a part of my life. I have no boyfriend so I just spend my time alone. I don’t need one anyways they’re all so boring and the same. The bad thing with vamps is that if we go beyond 200 years old unmarried our relationship is arranged.

When my parents told me they were going to start arranging for me is when I started distancing myself from them. I always dreamed of jumping into the ocean and swim until I can’t anymore, to get away from the arrangement. I want choose my man because I know I will be happy if I do.

Help me…

A voice echoed into my head and I stopped. I closed my eyes and listened for the voice. Help me. No one was saying it but someone was sure thinking it. Vampires are so sensitive to small things that a lot of us can read minds. The voice was coming from the rocks. I wasn’t allowed there. What if it’s a vamp though? I checked to see if anyone was looking then I ran. I got to a rock and climbed it. At the top I saw a mermaid. He was knocked out and his tail fin was stuck. I got as close as I could. This mermaid was so pale he was probably already gone.

He’s dehydrated I thought. I knew I had to get him back in the water. I couldn’t just pull him out I’ll rip off his fin which was already bleeding. So I pulled the rocks away one by one using my strength. I tore through seaweed with my fangs. Until I finally made the grip loser, I gently took the fin out of the hole.

The fin was ripped up and scratched up. It was so hard to look at. I had blood on my hands and I knew what I had to do. I put my hand on the raw, scaly flesh of the tail and let energy pass through my arms into my palms and fingertips. The tail glowed a bright yellow and I felt the cuts and blood go away. I opened my eyes and the tail fin had life again. The mermaid began to wake up. I took my hands away slowly and faced the mermaid. He flinched.

At first I didn’t understand why. But he was looking straight at my red eyes. Vamps and mermaids don’t get along.

He was terrified of me.
