LUKE

I am very curious about Annabeth's real family so I was the first one to ask question, "So... Annabeth, what's your full name?"

"Hmm, Annabeth Chase." she said. I never met any Chases before so, she's the first. There's a nervous look in her face when she looked at Thalia but still smiled. This girl must be brave, I thought. Thalia noticed her wariness.

"Hey, don't take the questions too seriously, kid. We just really want to know you more." Thalia said. Annabeth just nodded.

Thalia put his hands over the table and looked down on Annabeth, "Where you from, Annabeth? And what about your family?" she asked. Now, that I wanted to know.

"I'm from San Francisco. It's just me and my dad before... uhm, but then she married my step mom... a-and I have 3 half-brothers. I ran away from home because I felt that they don't want me anymore. Because I-I put our family in danger everytime monsters attacked." she said.

"Maybe your step mom just doesn't understand you. But we're here for you, Annabeth. What about your real mom?" Thalia asked, then she looked at me. I nodded at her. We knew then that her mom is her godly parent. Her mom is a goddess! Then I thought, maybe it's Aphrodite? 'Cause she's a beautiful girl.

Annabeth pouted and she was thinking. Then she sighed, "I never met my real mom." she said.

I leaned forward and asked, "Did your father told you anything about your real mom?"

She looked at me, "Uhm... my dad said she needed to go somewhere else... and, uhm, that I am going to see her someday." she said.

Thalia put her hand on Annabeth's shoulder, "You will, Annabeth. When the time comes." she said.

Annabeth smiled. But then a thought came to her and asked, "Y-you said that you're like me... uhm, what are we then?... W-why does monsters always attack us?" she asked.

Thalia and I glanced at each other. I don't know what to say to her. I don't know if she will process all our answers, plus, she's still young. I stared at Thalia and nodded towards Annabeth. She nodded back to me so I knew she got the message.

Thalia said, "We're different from other kids, Annabeth." Then she sighed and continued, "We have this special blood we got from one of our parents, and this is also the reason why monsters want us." she finished.

Annabeth frowned, "What blood? And how come it's because of them that I'm being attacked by monsters?" she asked. I knew then that her queries would be a long list. We can't stay long in the restaurant because some monsters might track our scents already.

Thalia was about to answer when I stood up and said, "We need to go. Now." then I looked at Annabeth, "We'll tell you everything once we got to our base camp. It's safer there to talk about it." I added.

I looked at Thalia and then she stood up, she offered her hands to Annabeth, "He's right, Annabeth. It's not safe here, let's go." she said.

Annabeth pouted, but still obeyed. She grabbed Thalia's hand and stood up. I left some bills on the table for our payment, then we went outside.

We walked through the forest again as we go to our camp in James River. Annabeth was walking two feet ahead of us, so I moved closer to my left, particularly closer to Thalia.

I was looking Annabeth, just to be sure she wasn't looking back at us, and whispered to Thalia, "Are we really going tell her everything?"

She moved closer to me, our arms touching each other. We've never been this close before. I wanted to look at her but I can't look away from Annabeth because she might look back at us.

I could see in the side of my eye that Thalia wasn't looking at me but Annabeth, just like what I'm doing. "We have to. We already told her something, so we might as well tell her everything, right?" she whispered.

We don't want Annabeth to hear us that's why Thalia and I kept whispering at each other. "Well, you're right. But do you think she can handle it all?" I whispered.

"Luke, she already fought monsters, she can handle it."

"Sure, she will. She's a one brave, little girl." Then unintentionally, I turned my head and found myself looking at Thalia. Our face was just a few inches from each other, and she was looking at me too.

Suddenly, we stopped walking. It was my first time to see her face up-close, and I found myself gazing at her beautiful blue eyes. Then I remembered how she kissed me when we were in Hal's house.

We looked away from each other when we heard Annabeth said, "What are you doing?" she walked back to us.

Thalia shrugged and moved away from me. But we were both too speechless to answer Annabeth.

"Are you two kissing?" Annabeth asked.

I looked at Annabeth, shocked by what she just asked. But then Thalia shouted, "N-No!... Why would you say that?" I could see she blushed though.

"Because you're face is too closed from each other." Annabeth said.

Thalia walked forward to Annabeth. She put her hands on Annabeth's shoulder, "Luke and I... uhm, we're friends. He's like my brother, and I'm a sister to him, just like what you are to us..." she said.

How come she's good at words? Then I realized that's one thing I like about Thalia. She just knew what to say to everyone no matter what the situation is. She looked at me and said, "...right, Luke?"

I cleared my throat, "R-right." I muttered.

Annabeth smiled. But then suddenly, she gasped and frowned. I didn't understand why, but quickly, she drew the dagger I gave her and shouted, "Monsters!!!" She ran back to where we just walked our way through.

I looked back to see where is this monsters, but I didn't see any. I looked at Thalia, who already has her shield on her and her spear. "Get her!" she shouted. I nodded, drew my baseball bat and quickly ran through Annabeth.

We found Annabeth attacking a tree. Just a few feet ahead from where we were a while ago. Thalia and I looked at each other, confused.

We walked foward to her. "Where's the monsters?" I asked.

She didn't look back, but kept attacking the tree. "They're here!" she shouted.

Thalia and I looked closer on the tree and saw many spiders. Then we looked at each other, very much confused. Thalia laughed. And I joined her.

"Annabeth, it's just spiders" I said.

Then she shouted louder, "Ahhhhh!!!" she ran into the back of Thalia and hugged her.

I could see why she ran. Spiders followed her, then I thought --why are these spiders not bothering me and Thalia. Annabeth started to cry, so Thalia started to face her shield against the spiders. Surprisingly, the spiders went away.

Thalia knelt before Annabeth and wiped her tears, "Why are you so afraid with spiders?" she asked.

"She's seven, Thalia." I muttered.

"She fought monsters before, Luke..." Thalia said, then she glared at me. "...but she's definitely more afraid with spiders than real monsters." she added.

Annabeth calmed down and stopped crying. "They're following me! I don't like them! Every night in my room, they always crawl up to me and bite me!" she cried.

Thalia and I exchanged looks again. We didn't know why spiders hate her, we didn't know what to say. I walked closer to them and said, "We'll find out about them, Annabeth. Don't worry. But for now, we need to go. We're close to our base camp already."

So we continued walking through the forest. We walked in silence as I thought about spiders. I didn't know anything about myths, but if those spiders can sense that Annabeth is a demigod but not us, this is bad. Maybe more monsters could sense us then. We need help.
