maybellene smiled as she poured vodka into a glass cup. she worked the graveyard shift at her uncle's bar, the tipsy tonic, and though she didn't look the part she enjoyed it. she liked working there. the scene was different then it was during the daytime and evening. during the daytime no one really came in and during the evening it was a madhouse filled with hopeless drunks and new 21 year olds waiting for their first shot of tequila. but during the late hours, it was different. there still was a large amount of people in during this time but it wasn't hectic. it wasn't hectic at all. everyone was quiet and only spoke among themselves or whoever they were with. it was oddly peaceful and that was why maybellene enjoyed working the graveyard shift; she enjoyed the peace and quiet.

matt was also there. matt worked the graveyard shift alongside maybellene. they've known each other ever since her uncle hired him, which was about a year ago. the only reason he hired him was to make maybellene less lonely and a bit more protected because sometimes aggressive drunks would come in and she doesn't like dealing with them so matt does. he was like a older brother she never had and that made her smile. he was cleaning the glasses and wiping down the counter as maybellene handed the alcoholic beverage to the man who ordered it.

"he was standing again.", maybellene told matt as she placed the bottle of vodka back on the shelf. "and just like yesterday, there was large amounts of empty seats so why didn't he just sit down? i mean his legs probably get tired of standing, don't you think?"

matt chuckled. he knew all about 2 in the morning subway boy. maybellene has been rambling on about him for the past 4 months to him and to say he was slightly annoyed was an understatement. "gee may, i don't know. if the man wants to stand, let him stand. i mean it is a free country after all.", he responded as he poured a shot of brandy and gave it to a girl who looked like she was having a bad day.

"i'm not saying that it isn't. i mean he's been standing for 4 months, 4 months. and he's completely neglecting the seats. i mean if you weren't supposed to use the seats then why would they have placed them all around the sides? just for the hell of it? i think not. you're supposed sit down when you ride the subway.", maybellene went on. she was frustrated.

matt looked at her serious face. "no way. i never thought in a million years I would live to see the day that maybellene opal has it bad for a boy. let alone a boy who she doesn't know.", he laughed, only to receive a slap at the back of the head by her.

"shut your trap. i do not have it bad, i'm just... curious. that's all.", maybellene said as she walked over to a stool and sat down. she did have it bad but chose not to admit it because she knew if she did matt would never let her hear the end of it. matt rolled his eyes, knowing that she didn't like admitting that she was wrong and that he was right. "why don't you just talk to the boy may? i mean what's the worst that can happen?", matt asked, making it sound plain and simple.

"it's not that easy. you can't just go up to a complete stranger and automatically become best buddies. that's not how the law of friend making works.", she stressed.

"just watch.", he responded as he went up to a man who looked like he had too many. maybellene watched as matt had a 10 minute conversation with the man, laughing and smiling. they did this weird fist grab at the end before he returned to his spot next to her. "his name is chase, he recently got a divorce, he likes birds and has a weird talent in weaving baskets. new friend? i think yes.", he smiled as matt gave himself a mental high five.

"you're so oblivious. he only spoke to you because in those ten minutes you gave him at lest 5 free drinks and chips. he used you for the booze and free food.", maybellene said, shaking her head.

"chase wouldn't do that. yo chas-", but it was to late, he was gone. matt's smile faded as he understood maybellene's point. she laughed knowing that she was never going to let him hear the end of it.  she gave him a pat on the back. "i'm going to take my break now.", maybellene said as she left matt and went into the breakroom. there she sat down and listened to music on her phone and ate some stale crackers that were probably expired. she then closed her eyes and fell into a deep slumber.

"maaaaaaay."

"oh maaaaaaay."

"MAYBELLENE!"

her eyes opened quickly. there hovering above her stood a smiling matt. "shift's done. we can go home now."

she stood up and nearly collapsed. her legs were asleep and whenever she moved them it gave her this tingly feeling. matt had already cleaned up and punched the two of them out. it was 9 in the morning and jess, the girl who worked the day shift, was already there and so was her uncle. maybellene grabbed her coat and walked out with matt. the sun was already rising and the warmth lit up her face. she got into matt's car as he drove her home. she didn't like taking the subway home, it was always busy at this time. plus, tagging along with matt meant free breakfast and not having to pay so it was a win.

he bought them some iced coffee as well as some biscuits. maybellene was quiet the whole car ride, often day dreaming about louis; the subway boy. she was wondering what he was up to and if he ever thought about her. little did she know that he did, and more often then she knew.

they arrived at her apartment complex. she thanked matt and they said their goodbyes. she entered her apartment and set down her iced coffee on the white countertop. her apartment was pretty empty. the only piece of furniture she had was her bed and nightstand in her room and a kitchen table with 2 chairs. her fridge had a decent amount of food in it and she had a few pans but that was pretty much it. she didn't have a t.v or computer but she had her phone and that was her source of entertainment and it was enough. she didn't have a car either since working at the bar only made her gain enough to just pay rent and the bills. that was why she rode the subway; that was her main form of transportation(besides matt giving her ocassional lifts).

she went into her room and drank the iced coffee while watching videos on youtube. this went on for a few hours until her eyes couldn't stay open. it was only 7 o'clock when maybellene fell asleep. she did dream that night. she dreamt about louis. she always did.
