maybellene stood at the edge of the tracks, awaiting her ride. the air was chilly as her breaths came out as smoke. it was 2 a.m on a early saturday morning and the station was moderately empty. there was a few business men holding their suitcases speaking in low mumbles and a mother holding onto her child sitting down on the graphite covered bench but other then them, it was still pretty empty. maybellene enjoyed the emptiness though, she found it peaceful.
he walked down the stairs and scanned his ticket in the machine before it let him through. he was wearing a plain gray t-shirt with a tan jacket over it. his black jeans complimented his outfit and his faded vans made him look young. his hair looked messy, but he pulled the look off. this was the boy that was always at the subway at 2 a.m. his name was louis, but maybellene didn't know that. the two were strangers to each other. closet thing to interaction between them was when maybellene sneezed and louis blessed her, but that was months ago. the two never spoke to each other, even though they both secretly wanted to.
the subway came and everyone boarded. the business men sat down besides each other and began talking about , well, business. the mother with the child met up with her husband who was already on board and they sat in the far back. maybellene sat near the doors and looked over the book that showed all the routes and different stops. she already went over it a countless amount of times but it kept her occupied during the ride. louis was a few feet away from her, holding onto the bars instead of sitting down. maybellene always wondered why he preferred to stand instead of sit, i mean there was plenty of empty seats. but louis enjoyed standing, when he stood he felt as if he had somewhere to go even though he didn't most of the time.
louis rode the subway just for fun; he never has a specific place that he wants to go to. he's been doing this for that past 4 months ever since he was on released break. louis is in a band, one direction, and just recently they were released on a one year hiatus. louis isn't used to having breaks because for the past years he has constantly been on the move from city to city, state to state and even country to country. he's been living a fast-paced life so when they announced the break, he was lost. the subway helps him relive that fast paced life, even if it's just for a few hours. his bandmates think that it's a waste of time, but he enjoys it. louis enjoys riding the subway, no matter how stupid it may sound.
but maybellene didn't know that. maybellene didn't know louis's reasoning for riding the subway. she thought he always had someplace to go. she sometimes would create backstories for why louis was riding the subway that day. one day he was wearing a snapback backwards and some sweats so she made up in her mind that he was going to play some late night soccer with his friends and have a good time when in reality louis just wore the cap because his hair was an utter mess and his sweats were the only clean thing in his closet. another time louis had his hand in his pocket and looked very nervous so maybellene thought that he was going to propose to the love of his life but actually louis was nervous because the papparazi saw him come into the subway and he was debating whether to call his publicist. all in all, maybellene enjoyed making up these scenarios in her head even though she knew all of them were probably wrong. this was another thing that kept her occupied during her ride to work.
louis was also interested in the girl who always rode the subway at 2 in the morning. he noticed within his first month of riding the subway that she was always there. at first he thought that it was creepy and even had a grudge that she was an obsessive fan stalking him in the night but by the third month he finally realized that she had no idea who he was and that she must have a logical explanation for always riding the subway at 2 in the morning, unlike himself. louis was fond of this girl and internally smiled whenever he saw her. this was another reason why louis rode the subway; to see the girl who rode the subway at 2 in the morning just like him.
the subway was silent. no one spoke. the business men got off a few stops ago and so did the married couple and their child. it was just maybellene and louis now. you would assume that there would be tension between the two, considering the fact that they were the only two passengers left, but there wasn't any. it was if the silence did the talking for both of them. the subway stopped once more and it was maybellene's stop. she didn't want to get off. she didn't want to leave the boy with the plain gray t-shirt with a tan jacket over it. she didn't want to leave the boy who always rode the subway at 2 a.m just like she did. she didn't want to leave the boy who's name she didn't know but felt as if she could say anything to. but she got off the subway anyway, because she knew that the next time she rode the subway at 2 in the morning he would be there. he was always there.
and with that, maybellene smiled and headed off to work while louis stayed onboard and continued to ride the subway, thinking about the girl who also rode the subway at 2 in the morning with him.
