Pete didn't know how Mikey could think, even for a second, that he didn't know that. He knew Mikey loved him, he just wished that he was more willing to do something about it. Pete loved Mikey more than he wanted to, and than he ever thought he would. There was something about him that he liked, but he couldn't see what it was.
"Of course I know that, Mikey," Pete said, trying to sound reassuring, but failing and sounding sarcastic instead.
"No, I really mean it," Mikey said, trying to convince Pete, "I just don't know if I like you anymore."
"Wait, what?!" Pete said, suddenly understanding what Mikey was saying, "Are you saying you don't want to be friends anymore?"
"No, no! I just mean I love you in the way you'd love a best friend, I don't like like you anymore."Pete felt incredibly relieved. He didn't know what he would have done if Mikey hadn't wanted to be friends. He didn't want to think about it, actually. Knowing himself, it probably would have been something stupid.
"So, we're just friends? Just best friends?" Pete asked, trying to make himself completely certain that was what Mikey really meant.
"Yeah," Mikey nodded, "just best friends."Pete wanted to see how far he could push his luck and get Mikey to extend the deal, because, despite being perfectly happy being 'just best friends', he obviously still would have preferred more.
"What about," Pete said, smirking, "just best friends... with benefits?"
Mikey tried his best to look like he was thinking about it, but really he was just laughing at Pete's suggestion of it. Pete wanted to be hopeful, but he could tell Mikey was only joking. It wasn't he'd really meant anyway.
"You know," Mikey said, "maybe not... those benefits... If you want though, seeing as we are 'just best friends', we could always kiss again."
Pete hadn't quite expected Mikey to give him an answer like that, but he certainly was happy with it. He wasn't quite sure, however, if it was an invitation to do it, or Mikey just saying that it could be a thing. Pete didn't think he'd ever be so bothered by someone being slightly unclear with their wording. He suddenly had another dilemma. He didn't know if he should ask Mikey what he'd meant by that, or if he should just leave it.
Being the kind of boy that he was, Pete, of course, just had to ask Mikey and satisfy his curiosity.
"Did you mean I could kiss you now," Pete asked, "or that you're open to it whenever else?"
"Really?" Mikey asked, laughing, "You have to ask that?"
"Well," Pete mumbled, starting to feel himself blushing with embarrassment, "I just wanted to check--"Pete was cut off by Mikey kissing him, something he wasn't really expecting. He wasn't against it at all, though, and, once he was over the shock, kissed Mikey back, despite not really having any idea of what was going on.
"What are you doing, Mikey?" Pete asked, smiling widely, like he'd won a prize, "That wasn't very 'just best friend'-ly of you, now, was it?"
"Perhaps not," Mikey laughed, "but, my dearest Peter, perhaps that was not actually my intention?"Pete was confused as hell. There was no other way of putting it. He didn't understand how someone could go from crying about being kissed to laughing about kissing someone in such a short space of time.
Mikey could tell Pete was confused, but he didn't really care. He wasn't confused, he knew exactly what he was doing, and he felt like he was doing a pretty good job of it. All he really wanted to do was confuse Pete.
In a 'just best friend'-ly way, of course.
Mikey looked at the clock on his phone, he didn't have a time he needed to get back home, but he knew he should probably leave. He didn't even want to leave, but he didn't know what he'd do if he stayed.
