I wake up feeling groggy, but great. My jaw emphasizes how well I slept by cracking  when I let out a huge yawn.  After getting dressed, I begin to remember a dream I had last night. It was interesting, but it helped with the good night (and afternoon)'s sleep.

What was it? As far as I can remember, Day was telling me something important. Gradually I wait for the rest to come as I brush my hair and teeth. It's not until I get to the kitchen when I remember her saying something about winning.

Was she saying we won the case?

A pair of arms wrap around my waist, giving me a tight squeeze. "Morning, Miya!" Mandy chirps. "How did you sleep?" she gets out a pan and a couple of eggs.

Wary of her brightness, I slowly ask, "Good. You?"

"After what happened last night, I slept awesome!" Mandy cracks open the eggs after the pan's ready. She swishes the yellow goop around.

"Did anything happen at the courthouse?"

"Mm-hm. You're officially in the family!" I get out a plate for Mandy's breakfast, and she thanks me. "So, how do you feel now that you've got an additional brother and sister?"

"Well, so far so good," I respond, feeling a smile. The smile quickly fades away as I remember Kelly. "Have you told my sister yet?"

Mandy shakes her head. "I can text her if you want."

Getting my phone out, I say, "I got it."

________

I'm already swinging up high when Kelly finally arrives via her friend's mom's carpooling. We both agreed it'd be a bad idea to go to our house (her house, I remind myself), and Josh's place would be a little crowded for our taste. Now that winter is coming early, I figured the parents wouldn't be letting their kids go to the park.

My sister's wearing a big jacket, which makes her look like a disfigured blue Peep. Bunny or duck, I don't care. "What's up?" Kelly greets, taking the swing next to me.

I slow myself to a gentle swinging before I tell her what happened. She only knew about me staying at Josh's house a little longer than we thought, so I was expecting either happiness or sadness. Kelly came off as relieved when I told her about the victory, and I figured it's about 50/50.

"I'll be able to visit you, right?" she asks afterwards. "If I can't see you at all, I'll be pissed."

I laugh at how tough she sounded. "I told Day I want that."

"Good. You still need your weekly dose of awesome to help."

________

An hour of frivolous fun later, Kelly and I have just made plans to hang out at a cafe next weekend. We were getting the last details down when I get a text from Josh.

Mom wants to know if you want to look for therapists that specialize in the transitioning.

Sure, I text back.

"Who were you texting?" Kelly asks. I show her the very short conversation. "That fast?"

I put my phone away. "I'm pretty sure their favorite saying is 'The sooner, the better'."

Kelly just shakes her head. "At least they know what you need," she says. "And I know another thing you need!"

I raise an eyebrow in suspicion. "What would that be?" I ask.

Excitedly my sister takes out her wallet and shows me the many coupons she's got stashed in it. I'm debating on being impressed that she's finding way to save money or cautious because it looks like the beginning of a hoarding habit.

"Shopping!" she squeals.

I laugh. "I'm okay with it as long as I'm choosing which stores to go," I say.

_______

The next day I come to school and go straight to Miss Young's classroom. She's grading papers at her desk, listening to some music on her computer. I stand in front of her desk and wait until she notices me.

"Yes, Matthew?" she asks, setting her pen down. "Is there something going on?"

With a nod, I take out a folded paper and place it down on her desk. "It's the assignment you wanted me to write," I say. When Miss Young looks surprised, I smile. "Read it later," I add.

I turn around and walk out, already hearing my teacher opening the paper and reading it to herself. I don't need to see it to know what it says.

I was born Matthew, but I knew since I could talk that I was really Miya . . .
