The henna night was a lot of fun. There were more boys in the Al-Ameen family but the girls knew how to have fun when they wanted to. We went to bed at 3am, not a good idea considering we had to be up at 9am to be ready for the nikah. Surprisingly enough, when I did wake up, it didn't take a minute longer for me to be out of bed. I was damn nervous.

Safiyana was waiting in my room for when I finished showering. I took my time though, doing weird yoga breathing techniques and singing old Bollywood item songs to keep my feeling de-stressed.

When I came back into the room, Kismat Bhabhi was with her. They examined my henna before handing me a bottle of lotion. I moisturized as they entertained me with the story of Kismat Bhabhi's wedding day. After I was primped and primed, I was helped into the dress Zinat bhabhi had gifted me. The makeup artist showed up then and got to work. Safiyana kept me company while everyone else went off to get themselves ready and get today ready. I was glad to have her there.

Her usual, laid back presence kept me happy and excited too. My hair was pulled back into the intricate chignon, with a couple strands falling around my face. My makeup was light and sparkly, perfect for the warm weather here. For the finishing touch, they put the dupatta over my head and set my tika in place.

"You ready?" Saf asked me. I nodded nervously and she stood me up and spun me around. I let out a tiny gasp as my reflection, just like Kismat and Safiyana both said they did. It wasn't even that I looked pretty. It was that I looked like a bride, like a person who wasn't me. I looked as happy as I felt.

I wanted to cry.

"No tears," Safiyana bhabhi warned from behind me. I let out a chuckle, taking deep breaths to steady my heartbeats.

"You think Yusuf's excited?" I met her eyes in the mirror.

"Are you shitting me?" she snorts so loudly I'm scared the rest of the country heard it. "He's been texting and calling us, asking if you were ready and happy and actually gonna show," she chortles. "I'm going to get dressed too, be back soon," she gives my shoulder a squeeze before leaving the room with the makeup artist.

As she left, my soon to be mother-in-law came in. "Mind if we talk for a bit," I stood up as she walked in.

"Of course aunty," I smiled. She gestured me to sit beside her on the bed and put a hand to my cheek.

"No more aunty. From now on, call me maa, mom, mum, mummy, take your pick," she laughed softly. " I just wanted to come and say that I'm very happy that you are now a part of my family. From the moment I met you, I became very fond of you. And Alhamdullilah I couldn't have found a better person to call my daughter. Thank you," she held both my hands in hers.

"Please don't thank me. I should thank you. I am gaining a family and one like this at that. Thank you, maa," I couldn't help tear up now. She gave me a hug, wiping her own stray tear, before standing up.

"You look so beautiful Mashallah. My Yusuf is so lucky," she teased. "Someone will come get you in a bit," she left me on my own then. I opened my phone for the first time today to see a text from Yusuf at midnight.

13 more hours... the longest 13 hours of my life.

Aww. I hadn't seen him for two days, which was an odd feeling. I'd gone weeks at a time without seeing him but since we got engaged, things drastically changed.
