Walking around the hospital with a large sack of toys makes me feel like a Santa Claus on a summer day. Unique, but it also earned me to get some bizarre looks from other people, who are visiting the local hospital today, like I was a mad psycho. Maybe I should have worn the complete outfit and dyed my hair white. Ho ho ho.
I was about to see the sick kids and play with them for a little. It’s been a few months since I last visited them with the boys. Heck, this was a great idea even though this time I’m going alone.
“Hey John, it’s nice of you to come and drop by today. The kids miss you and your friends.” Nurse Jackie welcomed me with open arms, even though I didn’t have an appointment to see them.
“I miss them too. I brought some toys and books for all of them.” I said, handing her the sack of goodies.
She looked at them and smiled widely, thanking me for everything. “This is all too much; we still have the toys you brought last time.”
“No worries, they would love the new stuff. I was thinking of bringing food for a change, but I didn’t know what they like or what’s good for them.” I explained, knowing that most of the kids here can’t eat a certain food.
“Yes, maybe you can talk to the other volunteer so she can give you the list of food they can all have.” She started walking and leading me to the way where the kids are, giving me back the sack. “You should hand these to them. They’ll be thrilled.”
I nodded and continued on following her to their wing, slinging the sack on my shoulder. We reached the children’s wing in about eight minutes from the lobby where she previously greeted me.
Knocking on the door, a sweet angel-like voice talked, and told whoever was outside, to come in.
“Hey Bailey, this is John. John, this is Bailey.” Nurse Jackie introduced us together. Apparently, Bailey was the other volunteer she was talking about.
Of course, I knew about it because of Kevin. This was the reason why I went to look for Kevin yesterday, instead of hanging out with Bailey. I could have brought the whole contents of the supermarket, maybe even own one now, but I thought it was better to actually see her in a different environment, perhaps to get to know her even better, not that annoying her at the grocery was enough. I wanted to see possibly another side of her.
“Hey John, what are you doing here? How did you find this… thing?” She asked, confused was obvious in her face, probably she’s thinking I’m stalking her or something, where in fact, I actually am.
But then having been in here months ago could be the explanation that she would think otherwise.
“Here to visit the kids. I’ve missed them.” I smirked and walked passed her to get everyone’s attention.
And of course my nosy ears could hear Nurse Jackie’s conversation with Bailey near the door. “Oh good, you two know each other.” Nurse Jackie commented. She was one of the older nurses that handle the children’s wing of the hospital. I’ve known her for about 2 years, the first time we ever came here; she was one of the nurses that have accompanied us.
She loves children, and has three kids of her own, two sons and a daughter. Nurse Jackie is in her late fifties, and has been working at this very same hospital for more than ten years.
“Hey guys, did anyone miss me?” I said loudly for everyone to hear to catch their attention. All curious eyes focused on me and some of the kids ran towards where I was standing hugging me.
“Uncle John, you came back!” A little girl called, hugging me like there’s no tomorrow. Her name is Sophie and she has been in the hospital for her treatment for a long time.
