Chapter 16

June's POV

"Hey, Louis! You in there?" a husky voice yelled, and I squeaked in surprise and a little bit of fear. Who else knew Louis existed? Everyone else that could have saw him were dead, except for me, and I think we just established that wasn't going to happen.

Louis froze and peeked over the side of the balcony.

"Who's that?" I whispered.

"Sshh!" he abruptly shushed me. "That's Fin. He... he made me into who I am."

My eyes widened. So down below was the vampire that made Louis... well, a vampire. My heart trembled in my chest. Do I thank him, curse him, or just scream my head off? I was thinking that last option....

"Listen to me," Louis whispered, grabbing my shoulders and looking me straight in the eye. "Whatever you do, you cannot go anywhere near them or make any noise. I'm going to hide you."

"Louis!" another voice shouted, banging the old rickety door. "We know you're there!"

I swallowed nervously. "There's more?" I asked as quietly as I could.

Louis rolled his eyes. "I told you!" he hissed. "I'm not the very last vampire out there! Their names are Fin, Sean, and Derek."

I nodded. I wasn't sure why any of that was relevant information to me, but I wasn't going to start a ruckus now.

"Come with me," Louis said, gently taking my hand and leading me over to the staircase. "You're going outside."

I gasped and nearly wrenched my hand away if it weren't so impossible.

"Where they are?" I demanded, and he shushed me again. I lowered my voice a notch. "That's stupid!" I exclaimed, quietly of course.

Louis rolled his eyes again. "Not out front, you dummy!" he told me, and started to clamber down the steps, dragging me along with. "Out back!"

"I'll be right there!" he shouted at the door. "I'm just disposing a body at the moment!" I winced.

"Well, be quicker!" the first voice snapped. "We can't wait outside here forever."

I crept as quietly as I could behind Louis as I followed him to the back porch and down the steps.

"Hide here," he advised me, pulling back a clump of bushes that revealed a small scoop in the ground.

"What?" I objected. "I'm too big for that! They could still see me!"

I trembled at that thought. Not just one, but four vampires all at once....

"Trust me," Louis said, shoving me in. "They won't find you. These flowers should hide you and disguise your scent. Just keep quiet and try not to move!" He raced back inside.

I grumbled under my breath as I twitched under the itchy leaves and pointy thorns. I tried to get comfortable but it was nearly impossible. I wrinkled my nose at the strong flower-scent. It didn't stink, but it was so strong it made my eyes water and nose itch. I rubbed them both.

I looked up reluctantly over the flower bushes and into the window that was almost directly above me. I hoped Louis' okay....

Louis' POV

As soon as I made sure June couldn't be seen outside the nearby window, I darted over to the front door and answered it. I faked a smile.

The other three vampires grinned at me before entering. Fin was the oldest out of all of us, but he only looked about mid-twenties. He had dark hair that was shaggy and uncared for. His green eyes were dark and murky, with dark circles underneath. Since he was leader, he was the scariest.
