Chapter 17

Louis' POV

"Bad news, guys!" I shouted, running back into the foyer. They glanced at me.

"She escaped!" I gasped. "I went to check on her and she was gone!"

Fin scowled, Derek shrugged, and Sean snapped his fingers.

"She couldn't have gone far," Sean said thoughtfully. "I'm sure if we all went looking for her we'd find her."

"Good idea," Derek agreed, nodding. I winced.

"Wait!" I cried, a little more loudly than I probably should have. They stared at me. I looked back at them sheepishly.

"I mean," I said quickly. "She might have gotten away already. Who knows, maybe she's at the police station already!"

"Then we have to find her!" Derek shouted. "She'll turn us in! Louis, you moron!"

He wasn't the only one thinking it. I was berating myself also. Stupid Louis, did you seriously have to bring up the police station?! Now they're going to want to search for her for sure!

"Let's split up," Fin said gruffly. "Sean, you take the left wood. Derek, you take the right wood. Louis and I will search around back, and the front if we have to. Though I doubt she could have made it past us."

I swallowed nervously but nodded with the others.

We stampeded out the back door and raced around. I stared in the direction Fin had sped off to. June, I hope you've hidden well...., I thought nervously before running off in the other direction.

June's POV

"See you soon," I whispered, smiling slightly. Louis only nodded once, a kind of stunned look on his face. I tried not to giggle as I turned around and ran for my life.

I wasn't in very good shape, so I was panting before I even reached the trees. But just the thought of Louis' "friends" and them wanting to kill me was enough to keep my legs pumping.

I'm not sure how long I ran for, but I ran what felt like long and hard, taking as many zigzags as it took to feel lost. Finally, I had to stop, panting heavily and sweat forming on my forehead and other uncomfortable places. I looked around. I had no idea where I was.

I hoped Louis held up on his end of the promise. Meaning, once all of his friends had given up and left, he would look for me. And find me, hopefully.

I stared around fearfully. I was lost, and the woods were creepy. The bark on the trees were gray, and the branches were bare. The ground beneath my feet was spongy and black, littered with thorns and dead plants. I couldn't see more than a hundred yards in front of me. I shuddered. Hurry, Louis, I thought.

I snapped my fingers rather loudly, and I winced. But I relaxed when nothing came out at me. I had an idea. I always felt better when I was listened to music, so I just had to make my own.

Hmm, what to listen to? What isn't creepy, but very light-hearted and silly and fun? I'd got it! "Want U Back" by Cher Lloyd, my very favorite song by her.

I nodded my head to the beat. "Hey," I whisper-sang. "Boy, you never had much game. So I needed to do an upgrade. So I went up and walked away-way-way...."

I'm not sure how many times I sang that song to myself, but it never got annoying. Just when I thought I was getting pretty good at singing I heard it.

Snap!

My hand flew up to my mouth, so I bit it to keep from shrieking in fright. I stared around frantically.

I was tempted to call, "Who's there?" but then I remembered Louis' orders. I had to stay as quiet and still as possible.

Snap!

I flinched a little, and I started to tremble. I immediately clamped my hands over my eyes. If I can't see you, you can't see me....

I suddenly heard a swoosh--a familiar one, in fact--and I couldn't help but let out a little squeak. I ducked my head, my hair falling into my face. I was shaking uncontrollably now.

Something grabbed my shoulders tightly. I screamed as loud as could be, but then a cold hand covered my mouth.

"Sshh!" a familiar voice hissed. "It's alright! It's only me!"

I spun around, wrenching his hand away from my mouth. I glared at him so hard I felt like my eyes were going to burn out of my head.

"Louis!" I snapped, not caring that I was talking rather loudly. "You nearly scared the shit out of me! What is your problem?!"

"Shut up!" he shot back, and covered my mouth again. "I've got some bad news."

I immediately stopped struggling and stared at him with wide eyes.

"The boys are looking for you," Louis explained quickly. "I tried putting it off and stupidly mentioned the police and everyone's looking for you and now you're in trouble and please don't hate me!"

He flinched like he expected me to hit him. I rolled my eyes and removed his hand.

"I don't hate you," I said. "And I know I'm in trouble and everyone's looking for me. That's why you asked me to hide. And look at the bright side: at least nobody found me yet."

"Oh yeah," he realized. "That reminds me." He suddenly snatched me up and engulfed me in a bone-crushing hug. "I'm so glad you're safe," he sighed.

"Uh, Louis!" I coughed. "Can't... breathe!"

He chuckled and let me go. I took deep breaths and brushed myself off, before briefly smiling at him and quickly pecking his lips.

"Now go back out there before your friends get suspicious," I ordered.

Louis glowered. "Yeah, right," he grumbled. "More like my enemies...."

"Traitor!" a voice suddenly yelled. We whipped around. A boy with dark, shaggy hair and gloomy green eyes was glaring at us. His fangs were elongated. He was a vampire.
