Chapter 19
Louis' POV
"June!" I cried as she collapsed onto the grass. Her light blue eyes were duller than usual, and she didn't look scared at all. She was actually rather calm.
"So, I'm dying?" she mumbled, and glanced at me. "Huh, that explains a lot..."
"You're not dying, June," I insisted. "You're-you're going to be alright."
"We both know that's a lie," she chuckled. "I'm going to be so lonely in heaven. Promise you'll visit?"
"What?" I asked. Even that sounded a little crazy to me. Was June going insane? The only place I was going was hell. I'm a vampire, after all.
"No, that's too much to ask...." June mused. "How about, will you please die soon?" I tried not to roll my eyes.
"You don't have to die," I told her quietly.
She frowned. "Yes, I do," she said matter-of-factly. "Everybody dies. Now it's my turn."
"You're not listening to me," I sighed. "This will sound a little selfish, but I want you to live forever, June. I want you to be here by my side for every single day of my sorry life. I don't want to be alone any longer. I want you, June."
She stared at me silently for a little bit. "That's nice," she finally said, her eyes really dim. She was almost dead now. I was running out of time. We both were.
"I love you, Louis," she whispered, and closed her eyes.
I glared at her body, but not actually at her. I didn't care if she gave me permission or not. I was saving her, whether she liked it or not.
I bent down and tried holding her neck wounds together. I worked on her left side first. I slowly ran my tongue over her skin and pinched the separate parts together as they healed.
She was going to have horrible scars like Frankenstein did when I was done. But I think we could live with that.
I did the same on her other side, and as soon as both sides were healed, I looked at her face expectantly. I expected the color to return to her face. I expected her eyes to open and her to sit up. I expected her to hug me and kiss me like nothing happened. I expected a lot of things.
But none of them happened.
I stared at her. Her breathing was weak. She was just on the brink of death. I slapped her cheek lightly. She didn't wake up.
"Wake up, June," I hissed and slapped her again. Still nothing. "Come on, June, wake up! Get up!"
I slapped both her cheeks, grief making me go harder and faster.
I forced myself to stop. This obviously wasn't helping her. I put a hand over her heart. Miraculously, it was still beating. I'm guessing if her wounds were still gaping she'd be dead already. She was bleeding a lot....
I started. That's it! She lost a lot of blood! If she didn't get more soon, she'd die.
I glanced at her. There's no way I'd be able to get her in the hospital in time. Even if I did, it would take a whole operation just to find out what blood type she was, and to find a donor for her. Let's face it, she's a goner....
Wow, I was an idiot. I'm a vampire. I could still save her. It's like I said all those days ago when I first met her: "I'm a vampire. There's nothing I can't do."
I bent down again and started biting her skin. I bit down both of her arms and steadily down her legs. I licked each bite soon after to seal the wound. To seal the venom inside of her.
I sat back and watched nervously as the last of her blood drained from her body. She paled until she was as white as me. Her scars disappeared, old and new. Like vampires are supposed to, I think she gained beauty as well. I couldn't tell. She was already beautiful to me.
Her chest stopped moving. I would've held my breath, only I didn't need to.
Come on, June, I willed silently. Wake up.
I found myself whispering those two small words.
Wake up, wake up, wake up....
Just when I was about to give up hope, June's eyes shot open. They were tinted red, like all newborn vampires. The tint would fade away as she got older and more mature.
She gasped and shot up into a seated position. She looked around nervously, until her gaze landed on me. Her lips split into a huge grin, the tips of her new fangs just poking out beyond the top lip.
"Louis!" she cried and attacked me in a hug. I hugged her back tightly. She's alive.... I sighed in relief.
She pulled back and stared around in wonder. "What happened?" she asked. "I had this dream that I killed your vampire friends and I was dying because I had scrapes in my neck and I told you I loved you...."
"That was all real," I informed her.
Her eyes widened. "Really?" she whispered. "Then... are you dead? Aren't I supposed to be dead? Why do I feel so cold?"
"You're not dead," I interrupted her quickly. "Neither am I. And in order to save you, I had to... um... turn you into a vampire."
June stared at me. I waited for her to yell at me. After all, she pretty much hated all vampires, hopefully except for me....
"I'm a vampire?" she whispered, half-rhetorically as she stared at her body. She felt her face. I nodded weakly.
"Well," she began slowly. "This isn't exactly what I was planning for. But I suppose that it was a good idea."
Now I stared at her. "What?" I exclaimed.
"Yeah," she said, nodding vigorously. "After all, I was dying, and now I'm alive. And I can stay with you."
She gave me a soft smile, and I grinned back. I squashed her in another hug.
"Also," she added, pushing me back slightly. "Heaven wasn't much fun without you."
"You went to heaven?" I gasped.
"Only for a second or two," she mused. "It was awesome up there... but down here is better. Because heaven doesn't have a Louis."
Aw, she's touching me. "And Earth wouldn't be the same without June," I said.
"Got that right!" she exclaimed. "Where would we be without summer?" We both laughed.
For a moment we just sat there together, enjoying life. Then June asked, "Does this mean I'll stay an eighteen-year old forever?" I nodded.
"And we can't have babies?"
"What the hell?" I cried and she burst out laughing.
"I only just became legal," she giggled. "And for marriage too, if you're still considering that."
"The vampire version of you is weird," I told her, gathering her up in my arms. "But I like her." She smiled in reply.
Life couldn't have been more perfect.
