Chapter 1
June's POV
Life isn't fair. That's my new motto. I found this out when my mother divorced my father, made us move all the way to Britain, and signed me up for some school I'd never even heard of. Thankfully, school didn't start for another two months, so hopefully by then I'd have enough money to move back to the US, back to my father.
I kicked a pebble and it went skittering away. I'd been trying to inflict my bad mood on other people, but it'd been hard. I was really shy, for one, and just seeing all of these British people made me want to crawl away and hide in a hole. And the weather wasn't exactly helping my mood either.
I brushed against a brick building as I walked, and I glanced up at the sky. It was gray, and the air smelled like rain. Typical England behavior. I hated Doncaster.
I heard something in the alleyway and I looked back down. I decided it was probably nothing and kept on going. But as I neared the alleyway, the sounds became louder. It sounded like two men, and one of them seemed to be pleading, the other threatening. I frowned and peeked inside.
"If you don't move, this'll be easier," one of the young men said, and my eyes widened. He was breathtakingly handsome, with messy brown hair and pale skin and striking features.
The other man wasn't as good-looking, and I squinted so I could see him better. He was pressed up against the wall, and I could see his chest moving all the way from over here as he breathed. His dark brown hair seemed to be matted to his forehead and his eyes were wide with terror.
I frowned again. He looked just as big as the other man. Why didn't he just beat him up and escape? I can't believe I just thought that.
"St-stay away from me," the frightened man stuttered. "You're not real!" He must be crazy, of course that other man was real! He's standing right in front of him!
The other man chuckled. "Oh, but I am," he said, advancing towards him. "I promise I can make this quick and painless. You just have to stay still."
The frightened man gave a quick shake of his head. "No, I never go down without a fight," he growled. He straightened up, and he towered over the threatening man. I winced. Now he's going to get it.
But he only shrugged. "Very well," he sighed. "But just know, you brought this upon yourself."
He glared at the man, and I watched as his eyes turned blood-red. My own eyes nearly popped out of my head. What the heck?! He leaped at him, and he sank his teeth into the man's neck. I swallowed back a gasp: his teeth were a pearly white, and deathly pointy. He's... a vampire.
I whipped around and stared at nothing, unable to watch the scene before me. I could hear the man screaming, then silence. I gulped. And took off running.
I had to find somebody! My mother? The police? I almost stopped running. I was such an idiot! The police wouldn't believe me! They would think I was too caught up in the Twilight series.
My mind whirled as I thought of something the probably-dead man had said. "You're not real!" He's right, vampires were only myths. They didn't exist.
I shuddered. Maybe I was hallucinating. That never happened. I was just too traumatized by the sudden unfairness in my life.
But that scream had sounded real. Those fangs had looked real. Those blood-red eyes looked real. I was not a creative person, I could never imagine something like that, much less hallucinate it!
Suddenly there were two cold hands on my shoulders and I cried out in terror. I spun around.
The handsome young vampire grinned at me, and I almost puked when I saw that his fangs were still red. I half-expected a forked tongue to peek out and lick them.
